Is it possible to print in black when the color ink is empty

Went to the store and bought black ink cartridge for my printer thinking I didn't need to refill my color ink but sure enough, I indeed needed them all refilled in order to print with black ink. Ridiculous! However, if you use a piece of paper or tape and cover up the censor in the middle (where it shows how much ink is left), you can trick your printer into thinking that there's ink left and you can go on printing in black.
