Is it safe to overextent VRAM usage of GPU?

Hi, recently got a GTX 960 2gb variant. I saw some games showing the VRAM usage on their settings and mine showed like 2,400MB/2,000MB in VRAM usage since I selected a "Medium" graphics quality in the game's setting. I want to know if I can continue using the "Medium" graphics quality of the game or just stay in "Low" graphics quality that shows 1,700/2,000MB of VRAM. Does going over the 2,000MB capacity of the GPU will break it over time? Thanks.

Solution
No, it will not damage the card. Going over your dedicated VRAM limit usually just means your card has to start using your system RAM, which is much slower, typically resulting in a large drop in FPS and/or increased stuttering.
