I heard/read opposing views on this. I plan to partition my SSD for OSs and Storage and most people say partitioning an SSD is safe but some suggest it's harmful. Just wanted to make sure it's safe so I don't screw up my SSD! :)

Solution
You should be fine, partitioning will not harm your drive.

Edit: To clairify:

The speculation on the subject revolves around the fact that a SSD degrades over time after a certain amount of times data is written to it. With more partitions you might be writing at a higher rate than if you just had one partition, but the chances of this negativley affecting you any time soon (within several years) is slim at best.

Safe yes.
But I think not a great idea. It is harder to manage two pools of space.
If one has fewer nand blocks underlying, it will get more than it's fair share of updates, leading to premature wear. But.... wear on a ssd is really not an issue.

And... to what end?
Reinstalling windows in a partition sounds fine, but you will need to reinstall apps that go onto the registry also.

FWIW, my method for backup is to occasionally clone my ssd to another.

Safe?
Absolutely yes.

Purpose?
There are scenarios it makes sense for sure. For example, a 512GB SSD which you then assign say 140GB for the C-drive then call the rest E-drive.

Use "E-drive" as a partition for Steam games (can have one per drive).

Um... why?

Because BACKUP IMAGES are a great idea for the Windows drive/partition but you may not want to backup the entire things with Steam games included as that adds a lot of time and used space to the backup image. Steam games if they get errors are easily repaired with "Verify Local Content".

(May be other reasons to partition an SSD)
