Is it safe to use *lower* custom resolution?

My monitor's max resolution: 3440x1440p
I want to lower it to 2560x1080p, I can't find it in Display Settings nor in Nvidia, it appears it's not supported by the monitor, so Is it safe if I add it manually through Nvidia Control Panel and use it?
(I'm only lowering resolution..)

Well, it would be safe... but the scaling might not look so good. Also, if it isn't supported by the monitor the screen might just go black... if it does, don't touch anything and it should automatically revert back to the old resolution in 15 to 30 seconds.

I already tried, it just not looking that good (compared to original 3440x1440p), I'm just concerned about monitor and GPU safety..
