Is my card good enough

I have a Radeon HD 4870 512mb, would that be ok to run Skyrim if my resolution is 1650 x 1080?

Skyrim is pretty CPU stressful, and a good CPU with a good GPU will be able to run it.
I've seen gameplay with an 1100T X6 and an HD 4870 1GB @ 1080p with a mix of settings. Around 30 to 50FPS. I don't think the 512MB will be able to handle it (I believe Skyrim uses around 700 to 1GB of VRAM) as well. Cannot tell for sure unless you try it.

Yes I am thinking of upgrading, any recommendations? I have tried it, it runs ok on high with some very minor stutters in certain areas. I have a Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition CPU so I'm just looking for the card to go with it for Skyrim.

Get yourself another Radeon HD 4870 and make a crossfire, if your PSU let. The performance will increase greatly, like a Radeon HD 6970, but without the DX11 benifits.

You will need decent card with a larger amount of vram of 512mb vram for Skyrim to work best , grab yourself a 6850 or 6870 for your resolution.
CFing your 4870 will still be limited to 512 MB.

Since you already have a good CPU, a decent GPU should do the trick. I still think you should try the agem out on your current setup and see how well it turns out. Here is a list I composed of GPUs depending on budget. It also includes data on recommend wattage for it:


Under $90: HD 6670 (Below 350W)
Under Sub $100: HD 6750 (400W)

Low $100: HD 6770 (400 to 500W)
Mid $100: HD 6850/GTX 460 (400 to 500W)
High $100: HD 6870/GTX 560 (400 to 500W)

Low $200: GTX 560 Ti/HD 6950 1GB (500 to 600W)
Mid $200: GTX 560 Ti/HD 6950 2GB (500W to 600W)
High $200: HD 6950 2GB/GTX 560 Ti 448 Cores (500W to 600W)

L,M,H $300: GTX 570/HD 6970 (500W to 600W)

Anything about $400: GTX 580 (500W to 600W)

probably a little off on the wattage, but nothing to serious.
