Is my CPU faulty?

I'm getting computer lock ups when I game and I think it's because I have an overheating AMD FX-8350 BE (at load it's around 78 with throttling). I actually RMAd my gpu - I got a refurbished one so I don't think that's the problem, I also did memtest86 for 8 hours, no errors.

Is my CPU faulty or does it just need a better cooler? If it just needs a better cooler my budget for is around $30-$40, what should I get?

nop I didn't oc it

It is not safe for FX CPUs to exceed 62c on the cores. Do you have a stock cooler? You need to at the very least reinstall it. With no overclocking a properly installed stock cooler should be more than sufficient especially in a good case like the Phantom.

AMD CPU's are famous for generating a lot of heat and power unlike intel CPU's. so you just need a better heatsink and fan.

The FX 8350 is a 125w CPU just as specified. AMD CPUs generally do not run as hot as Intel CPUs or handle heat as well. No CPU generates power. They draw and use power not generate it. I think you may be confusing all AMD CPUs with the hard to cool and power hungry FX 9xxx series.

yea I have a stock cooler, it's dust free and everything, I think I'll just order the 212 evo and install that, see how it goes

I unselected your best answer. As the information in that answer was wrong I wouldn't want anyone who reads this thread in the future to be confused by that.

You very likely don't need a better cooler. You need to properly install your existing cooler first. But it's your money.

I checked the cooler and there was a cable pushing on it, I cleared it but other than that the cooler is solid and doesn't move when I shake it, I think it's installed properly, I just tried prime95 again and it still has the heat problem.

Your temps show the cooler is not properly seated. If it was you wouldn't have an issue. A cooler is a piece of metal with a fan on it. Pieces of metal don't break. If the fan is spinning then the cooler is mounted incorrectly.

Remove the cooler. Clean off the old TIM with something lint free like a coffee filter and some rubbing alcohol. Apply new TIM according to the directions of whatever paste you use and reinstall the heatsink. I'd be willing to bet your temps would go to normal.

What are the temps of your individual cores?

Alright, I'll order some thermal paste today, I don't know the temps of the individual cores, it doesn't say on HWinfo

Edit: Actually I think I'm just going to order a new cooler too, I wanted a quiet one anyway
