Hey Guys, Recently I bought a used i7 870 for a cheap price. So I put that CPU in the motherboard, applied thermal paste and installed the intel stock cooler (all four pins were through the motherboard) then I turned on the pc and the ideal temp was 45-50° and while gaming it goes upto 90° in game and 98° on loading screen (after quitting , goes back to 55-50 soon enough) .My case is Antec GX200 with 2 120mm intake fans and cable managed. There is enough air flow in the case . So is my CPU Faulty? Can I fix this overheating ? Please Help.

The HSF is most likely either incorrectly installed or the plastic frame has warped and isn't applying sufficient contact force. Try an aftermarket HSF.

If the CPU was defective, your PC would most likely be crashing or refusing to boot. You could also try using HWInfo64 to check what CPU power draw the VRM is reporting if the VRM supports that, this will let you know if the CPU may have a problem with excessive power draw. If you are seeing a power draw of something like 15W at idle and your temperature is still hovering around 50C, then the HSF is definitely not making adequate contact.

Well, the above is assuming your room temperature is less than about 30C.

Was the heatsink the one included with the I7 870 or just an intel one? they made them in different heights and with or without a copper core. I'd say you just need a better cooler.

I like the 212 LED, mounting bracket has been improved, and it can support all the sockets, 775, 115x, 1366, 2011, am3, am4. Takes a minute to assemble properly, put in a bolt in the right position then clip on a retainer. Tower coolers need a backplate.

As I have already written, if the CPU was defective/faulty, your computer would most likely be crashing or not working at all. You most likely have either improper contact between the CPU and HSF or under-sized HSF.
