Yesterday I reseated my new i5 2500ks stock heat sink using the vertical line thermal paste method after it was overheating and making my computer shut off.

Now it's idling around 30-35c degees but when I open a game of Bad Company 2 in a server with no people the temperatures of the cores go up to 62-70degrees. Is this bad or too hot? It was only yesterday I applied the paste so it still has to break in. I don't really want to purchase a new cooler until I need to.

Also.. when I was wiping off the thermal paste and everything using the articlean stuff when it was all said and done I noticed a thin black line about a cm long on the top of the CPU. It woudn't come off so I guess its possibly product of the overheating? Could this have any harmful impact on my computer (ie. explode, start a fire, idk lol)? Could it affect performance?

Thanks!

What % of max is 2340 RPM? My fan PWM setting is 12.5% @ < 50C, which turns the fan @ ~780 RPM. I don't know about stock cooler, but still >2000 RPM seems fairly strong, though.

I don't know what answer you are looking for, but WR2 and dextermat already said your temps is normal. I can't come up with any better answer you will get here. Somebody @Intel said you don't need to be concerned unless the temp stays 90 constantly, but I didn't feel comfortable with going too high (even before experiencing it), which led me to the CM Hyper 212 plus from the get-go, and at least one possible root of worries (my wife calls me worrier) is gone.

Love how stock coolers are useless. If you can get aftermarket cooler for $20-30 it would be much better than stock. Anyway if money are short just add another fan on top of the stock one to blow directly on it...also make sure that your case has good ventilation if not take a side panel off and enjoy the games!!!

So back again! Ended up getting a CM 212+ ..wow I really didn't like the installation process for that.

Finally managed to get it done though.

Heres my CoreTemp while running Prime95 for about 5 minutes.

The idle seems about the same.. 30-38c ish
But running bad company the max I've seen so far is 54c.

Is this good? If I planned to over clock (don't plan to right now) would I need to remove the heatsink and reapply the paste or is this a good and respectable tempature to oc later in the future?

Edit: Also Core #2.. for some reason it likes trailing behind the rest.. it's still several degrees below the others and at idle I think I saw it at 23 at one point while the rest were around 35.

Great to hear! Yeah I live a few hours away from a Newegg place.. so I ordered it 1:30ish pm yesterday and it arrived this morning with the regular 3 day garunteed shipping.
