Is my graphics card being held back by my CPU?

I recently upgraded to a geforce gtx 1070 TI and am not getting the FPS and consistency of the benchmarks that I've seen. My CPU is an intel i5-4460. I also have 8gb of ram if that is relevant.

Solution

check you dont have random programs running while you game, something may be stealing cpu cycles

... or the 4460 just cant keep up and you are hitting that cpu's limit

im curious use DSR and raise the resolution in game to 1440p, do you still get the same fps?

lower it to 720p the same fps?

Wouldn't upping the resolution just drop my framerate more?

no upping the frame-rate would put more stress on the Graphics card, not CPU .And yes your CPU may be holding back your GPU because it is an older one. However it is still powerful and an upgrade would mean probably buying new ram and motherboard.

looks like I will need to upgrade to a new CPU then. Do you have snn recommendations to go with a 1070 TI?

Also, When I play GTA V for example, my GPU usage is maxed at 40% but my CPU usage goes up to 100% and crashes the game. Is this normal with this CPU?

no, you have gpu power to spare

the cpu is limiting it at 1080p

I have an MSI B85M micro atx LGA 1150

msi motherboards have a "slow" switch, make sure it is off and the 4460 is reaching it proper turbo boost speeds

The slow mode switch is turned off. In GTA V it was reaching advertised speeds, but usage again got to 100% and crashed. My RAM usage as also 7gb if that matters. CPU temp was around 65 Celsius also.
