Is my graphics card too powerful?

Hey guys I got a question. I have an ATI Radeon 4870 HD Sapphire that requires a 500W PSU. I have a Rosewill 500W psu. Only issue is that the card requires two 6 pin connectors. This psu has one. However, my other 375W psu has one, so I cut it off and spliced the wire into a 4 PIN to 6 PIN wire. It seemed to be running fine for 5 minutes until I noticed that the wire to my psu started smoking. Instinctually I cut all power to it and the smoke stopped. Luckily nothin was permanently damaged. What should I do?

I have to ask, why did you not just use the adapter with two connecters.

Buy a proper PSU. Generally I go with a 750 watt psu for one powerful GPU, then 1000 watt for 2 powerful gpus. Bronze rated at least.

I'm guessing the issue is the makeshift adapter I made.

One last thing: if I bought a PROPER adapter would it work? Has anyone used adapters before in this situation?
