Hello,
Just a few days ago, during a gaming session, my computer crashed for the first time in 3 years. My game started to stutter horribly for a brief moment before my monitors went completely black, all while the sound on my speakers were stuck in a loop. It hung this way for about half a minute before I panicked and hit the hard reset button on my tower.
The computer restarted just fine, but windows loaded without my video card. The fan on my card also throttled to 100% once windows loaded as well for some reason. I properly restarted my computer this time and the same thing occurred. I then proceeded to power down my computer, take out my card, clean the PCI slot and the connection, pop it back in and power up my computer. Everything was back to normal when it booted.
After the successful boot I tried the other PCI slots on my board, all worked. I decided to leave it in another PCIE_X16 slot in case the one it was originally in was defective.
Round 2; I decided to launch a game again a couple hours after all this occurred. The game launched successfully, but only lasted a minute before the same exact thing happened. This time taking the card out, cleaning it and popping it back in didn't work. I have yet to try anything else since.
I bought my ASUS GeForce GTX 680 back in 2012. All was well for the three years minus a few issues here and there. Just a few times a year my card would hiccup while gaming. My monitor's would reset momentarily, Aero theme on windows would get disabled and my game's FPS would noticeably drop, all while my card would throttle to 100% usage. It would always correct itself after a minute and this only occurred 2-3 times a year so I didn't think much of it at the time. I guess I had a defective unit from the start, or does this happen sometimes with normal cards?
I just wanted to make sure my card was at fault here before I moved on to replace it. I recently bought a SSD and had Windows installed on it, that couldn't be at fault here?
Thank you for your time!
