Is my hard drive making my games stutter?

So i've been having this 'issue' ever since this PC was built. In most of my games, I'll get an annoying stutter where my frames would drop from 60 to 58/57 and it will render as a stutter. Anyways I was thinking maybe it's my hard drive, because come to find out the RPM on the hard drive is 5900. Isn't that a little slow? and could this be why my games do this?

Games do not run off the HDD. The HDD simply loads the game, the maps, and such. The game runs from system memory. Any stutter would be due to the CPU and/or the gfx card more likely.

But yes, you should have a 7200 RPM drive with a large cache if you want good load times. Or better yet, a SSD.

Oh, well then i'm not sure what the problem is. i even reinstalled my OS (due to another issue) and it still happens. it's weird because some games are fine and some others aren't. bleh. thank you for clarification.

Depends on how much RAM you have . if the System is low in RAM it will start using the Harddisk for Virtual Memory , or it will reload while playing which will make the game stutter.

8G of RAM is enough. if you have lower then upgrade your RAM.

Hi there theterminaldreamland,

It is possible for a slow/damaged hard drive to cause stutter in open world games when loading textures let's say. I guess you can just test your drive and see whether there is something wrong with it: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
Though, the more probable causes are RAM and GPU. This is why, you can update your GPU drivers and test your RAM.
