My macbook pro 13” no touchbar mid 2017 (A1708) started to present this issue a few months back. After shut down or waked from sleep, it gets the folder with a question mark and it won’t boot. The only way I might get lucky and get it to boot up is if I persistently turn it on and off in 15 to 20 minutes intervals in which case when it does it works flawlessly. I was wondering if it’s logic board related or the ssd failing. I already run a diagnostic and got code VDH002 which apparently is the storage device failing. Also when this happens if I boot in recovery mode the ssd won’t show up in disk utility. I’ve been searching all over the internet and haven’t been able to find an answer other than apple’s replacement program for the ssd and logic board which my serial number shows that I’m not elegible. My other option is to take it to an apple store to get it checked out but, I can’t because there are no apple stores in my country, only authorized reseller.

Hope you guys can help me identify which of the two is the culprit.

Thanks in advance.

Creez, I am having this exact issue.
Was it an easy process to fix?
I am reading that the 2016 don't have the SSD soldered so it might be easy for me.
Can I ask if you fixed it, did you buy a used ssd?
any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Sorry for the late reply! My mac was fixed by an authorized service provider. After a extensive troubleshoot with apple, they referred me to an authorized service provider for a diagnostic. After the troubleshoot from the technician he got in contact with apple and told them that even tho my serial number was “not elegible” for the ssd repair program, the computer had the exact same symptoms as the ones affected. Apple without hesitation covered all costs of the repair out of warranty.

I was ready to do it my self but, since I had nothing to lose I tried with apple first and it worked.

In case you do it your self, I found this company on ebay that sells the ssds. I believe they are used but are tested and have like 2 months warranty. Here is the link https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/263599447923

But before you do anything try checking for eligibility for the replacement program here https://support.apple.com/13-inch-macbook-pro-solid-state-drive-service

I wish you the best of lucks, let me know if you need anything else.

Hi, could you tell me which country are you living in? And what’s the name of the services provider? I have the exact issue, the same one, but the authorised service provider told me it was a logic board problem, although they confirmed twice that my Mac had no hardware problems. I feel like not trusting to be honest because when it boots up it works flawlessly. THANK YOU!
