Is my monitor dead or is this fixable?

I'm currently using a 1440x900 monitor on my pc.

My main monitor is 1080p and I cant see the BIOS or windows off it it, the 2 ways I can get display off it is if I boot windows in safe mode on my 1440x900 monitor then switch the HDMI out and in to my 1080p monitor or if i switch my HDMI to my 1080p monitor whilst in the BIOS menus. If I start windows normally out of the bios I get the vista load tab and then the monitor disconnects from the PC.

Do I need a new monitor or does anyone know a fix to this issue?

Hello... By default, only one Hardware output connector on your Video card will be active for viewing the BIO's Boot screen. Determine that Active connector, and connect your 1080P to that connector.
In Windows... the Driver and "Software settings" can be set/changed to determine what monitor is "1" or "2" and the settings/resolution and connectors that drive them... it can be set to anything you want... BUT Will not change the "Hardware Bio's/Dos/Boot mode" of the Video card/MB.

I'm sorry to ask this but I don't quite understand what you mean, I've not seen any sorts of display settings in my BIOS before. Where abouts will it be located?

As you can tell I'm not the smartest guy and I opologise for that

Oh I am using the HDMI connector for both monitors though, same cable same port. So I never change what port I'm using the my graphics card

Hello... There is no software to control the Video Card outputs at "BIO's and BOOT" for the Video card... depends on what was pre-programed on the Video Card... Typically it is the DVI/VGA connector... Your Video card Boots up "Stupid" every time... And Windows drivers make it "Smart".
Windows is "Software" and it Loads software "Drivers" for your Video Card... Giving you control over the Other Connectors and Output settings on the Video card... these setting DO NOT store themselves into your Video card... settings only get stored in the Windows Driver software.
Every time you Boot your computer, your Video card just does what the Video card was PRE-programed to do... Typically the HDMI output connectors do not work... untill Windows software drivers turn them on.

Simply switch your cables at the Video card to show your "Boot Bio's screens" on the monitor you want. B )
You may need to have a DVI to HDMI "passive adaptor" or a DVI cable to your 1080P Boot/BIOS monitor... For your Video card.

Just a heads up I am still using your advice I just went to eat I will go play around with my bios now... Will a DVI to HDMI cable be good enough do you think?

I would be using a headset for sounds anyways. But I still didnt see anything in my BIOS in terms of video settings or usable ports and what not.

This cable did the exact same thing as my other cable, boots from lower res monitor but not from 1080 monitor.

Hello... there is NO BIOs settings... you VIDEO card boots up "stupid"... Windows loads drivers and Software to give you control over your Video card.... and makes it "smart".
Typically only " ONE " Display Port/DVI/VGA connector is "Active" before Windows Load... so connect your 1080P monitor to the Active port... To view Boot/MB information screen. B )

What Video card and Monitor are you using? Brand/model#

I cant get my 1080p monitor to boot ANYTHING no matter what cable type or port I plug it into on startup!

I am using a GTX970 GPU and my monitor is a Samsung LS23B350

Hello... You have to set your monitor to the type of connector that is plugged into it... push the buttons on the monitor to see the setup menu... Some older monitors are "stupid" too... and you have to tell them, how they are to be used... or you can have a Gaming Console plugged into different connector, to use too... "Video input switch"

Yes it checks for the HMDI and analog signals alternatively when I press it to

update: oh yeah, I couldnt found any kind of setup through the menu's there was only the option for PC or AV mode

Hello... PC mode please.
1) try a "Known good" DVI to HDMI cable.
2) Turn ON your monitor
3) set monitor to HDMI PC mode.
4) Boot computer to BIO's setup screen.
5) Connect DVI cable to the different connectors on the GTX970... find the "Active" Boot connector.

To test If the HDMI port is "Active" at BOOT....

1) try a "Known good" HDMI to HDMI cable.
2) Turn ON your monitor
3) set monitor to HDMI PC mode.
4) Boot computer to BIO's setup screen.
5) Connect HDMI cable to the GTX970... IS the HDMI a "Active" Boot connector?

Repeat this Procedure with your Known GOOD Monitor... IS your MONITOR DEAD?

I followed these steps to the best I could I cant get into the BIOS if I start with just the Samsung 1080p monitor in not matter what port, all the ports are active because they all boot using my working 1440x900 monitor. I also just tried a 32" LED TV with the HDMI to HDMI and my computer picked it up instantly and diplayed it in 1080p.

and yes the HDMI is active at boot.

Conclusion seems to be everything works EG. all cables all ports on both my 1440x900 and the 32" LED TV the only thing that doesnt boot is the 1080p samsung monitor.

Only way I can get display on the samsung 1080p monitor is if I use my xbox and diplay that on there or boot on my 1440x900 with low resolution and then switch over the cable to the samsung 1080p as if im 'mirroring it' onto it or something.

And is ALSO good to know the HDMI port is "Active" on the new GTX970's.

Try the AV mode and what changes?

Everything I locate on your monitor is in Espanol~ and I'm not good with that.

I'm wondering what standard the HDMI port is on it? There are different HDMI cables/ratings/standards/specs and communications/Commands.

And I'm wondering if the HDMI input on your monitor need some kind of Command signal from the Video card to "Turn ON" through the HDMI cable... because your Gaming console is sending it one...

Like I said HDMI cables have changed through the years...
Your Monitor Could be defective... for this reason only... in the electronics... one bad solder Joint... under sensitive chip?

AV mode seemt to be the exact same result, just picks up nothing unless the boot is already done from another TV/Monitor in low res

As for the spanish thing, yes I ran into that. I added HS/EN to the end of the model name and it didnt really help 🙁

Would you recommend me having to buy a new monitor then because this samsung in infuriating me?

Hello... I feel it is a RMA suspect due to your Good testing and results.
Unless you would like to call customer service... and see if this is a Monitor setting or HDMI cable version Fix.

Look back at my last Posts... time to time due to updating of Thoughts.. as I would like them to be complete for others to read.

OK thank you so so much for all your help It's nice to know for definite that it is the monitor and not a defective GPU. I will leave it a couple more days to see if I can think of anything and if not fixed by monday I will go buy a new monitor :)
