Question Is my motherboard going bad?

I built a PC roughly 5 years ago and have had zero issues until this week. For the past 3 days, my computer will randomly shut off (no errors, no BSOD, just powers off). It usually happens within 5-20 mins of the PC being powered on. We had some power outages due to weather so I thought maybe this caused an issue (even though I plug into a surge protector). First thing I did was swap out the power supply and plugged into a different outlet than normal. Same issue happened. After using the computer (web browsing) for 10 mins it shut off. I ran a Chkdsk on the SSD but this returned no errors. I then ran a Windows memory diagnosis on the RAM and that also returned no errors. This leads me to believe the motherboard is the issue. Is there any other way for me to verify this before buying a new one? I have an MSI Pro Series B450M PRO-M2. A BIOS update was done on the motherboard as well, but to no avail.

Verify if the temps of the PC are normal.
Use a software like HWiNFO

Since you've got limited time to work with the PC, better do it fast. Also check Event Viewer to see whats causing the shutdowns. (attach a pic for me to see)

It may be shutting off to protect itself, so checking the temps and also verifying if the fans are indeed spinning can narrow the problem down further.

I've had a problem like that too with an older motherboard where the same thing happened, but in my case it got worse and worse till one day it didn't power on at all.

I am checking my temps now and looks like the only high one is my CPU at 95 C. I removed my cooler and cleaned/reapplied thermal paste and still get the same temp. Here are the events I see at the times of the outages

The previous system shutdown at 9:00:48 PM on ‎1/‎22/‎2024 was unexpected.
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

What CPU do you have, what cooler is it and what are you doing when it hits 95C? That seems really high for AM4.

I have an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 with a corsair cooler. Was checking my temps and the CPU went up to 114 C before the PC shut down. I'm thinking my CPU cooler may have gone bad.

Yeah that definitely sounds like a cooler where the pump isn't working. If you live in a place with decent Thermalright availability you can get a fairly inexpensive air cooler which will be plenty if the cost is important to you.

yep. as the others said, temps should be look into. 95C in idle isn't good at all, no wonder it shut down.

The CPU cooler turned out to be the issue. Replaced this and I'm now running at 39C idle. Thank you all!
