I have an Old Xeon W3520 in My Old Rig, Asrock X58 Deluxe. It is working fine but I want to upgrade the memory. I would like ECC.

I need to know if my processor is an 1S series sense I am not finding what the 1S truly means. The following is the information on the Motherboard Webpage. I have bold the section about the 1S.

- Triple Channel DDR3 memory technology
- 6 x DDR3 DIMM slots
- Supports DDR3 2000(OC)/1866(OC)/1600(OC)/1333(OC)/1066 non-ECC, un-buffered memory
- Supports DDR3 ECC, un-buffered memory with Intel® Workstation 1S Xeon® processors series
- Max. capacity of system memory: 24GB*
- Supports Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)**

You can also view the full MoBo specs here: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/X58%20Deluxe/index.us.asp

I owned that motherboard years ago with a i7 920. It really was a POS just like every other Asrock board I've owned.... But I do know it will accept 8GB dimms. even though it says 24GB is the max, 48GB will show up if you use 8GB Dimms.

I don't know why you would want ECC memory unless you are doing mission critical work. But you can currently buy a 1600 DDR ECC 64GB kit on ebay for under $100. Just use 6 of the 8 dimms for 48GB. Before you ask, ECC memory does not come above 1600 for DDR3.

I found something when I first got the motherboard about going over 24gb. It was related related to the speed of the memory. If you used 1333mhz up to ______ you could go higher than 24gb. Did you ever try identifying the speed of the memory once the OS was up? That's good feedback about 1600Mhz but it would be good to know if it actually performed that way. The bios has to be set to optimal performance to get 1600mhz+ then it shows up in speccy

This is what I initially wanted: [strike]http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/x58-deluxe/CT3460757#productDetails[/strike]

It says 1866Mhz ECC. I don't know if it will actually register at 1866Mhz but I thought I would see what you think.

I did not know that 8GB dimms could be that affordable. Just looked at them on ebay. I'll have to keep looking.

Any idea what 1S Xeon means? I'm assuming Series 1 but I have to check with you guys bc I have not this kind of information on the series of a xeon.

I'm just working on my machine. My old memory has errors/damage in booting sometimes. Currently has 6GB thought I would upgrade nicely.

I messed up on the link. it's actually this one I want http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct3kit51272ba186dj

Yeah I ran a 64GB 1600 kits @ 9-9-9-30 with 6Dimms for a total of 48GB. Worked fine until I got a new computer a month later and used that ram with it for 4 years so far now.

I don't think 1866 ECC ram exist, never seen any ever sold. This is because Xeons don't support overclocking and 1600 is the limit. I was able to run 2400 ram, but it did some strange things. Ended up with a strap of 125 and 2133. Wasn't 100% stable.
