Hello All,

I want to upgrade my current graphic card. But i am not sure if my current power supply is enough or not.
I have purchased a Nvidia GTX 570, unfortunately my computer didn't start. I returned it.
Newer generation cards consumes a lot of power. So i have decided to go with Nvidia Quadro 4000 which is more energy saver.
Before purchase i want to be sure, if my current power supply will be happy or not.

According to specs my current graphic card consumes max 75 W.
New quadro 4000 needs max 150 W.

My power supply is a Cooler Master 850W

Here is my current rig:
TYAN S5396WA2NRF
2 x 2.5 QUAD CORE INTEL XEON
4 x 4 GB KINGSTON FB-DIMM 667 MHZ DDR2 RAM
5 x 1TB. SEAGATE BARRACUDA 7200 RPM ST31000333AS
1 x OCZ-VERTEX2 3.5 180GB
1 x LG DVD WRITER
1 x QUADRO FX 3700 512MB
2 x PCI-E USB 3.0 CARD

Thanks in advance! :ange:

yea 850watts is plenty for a 150watt gpu and two cpu system......quick question though...what are you planning on using the graphics card for? hopefully not gaming cuz those quadro cards suck at it....also u said the new generation of cards consumes alot of power....the newest generation of nvidia cards consumes less power than the gtx 5 series like you had (the gtx 570)

@drums 101
No it is not for gaming. My primary softwares are Maya and After Effects. I was happy with my old Quadro up to now. I have checked new generations gtx cards too. But i don't use Windows 7. I have installed Lion 10.7. I have been using my system for over 5 years as a hackintosh. So 6xx gtx cards are very difficult to install with full acceleration. Quadro 4000 works OOB.

@aqualipt Because of previous reasons it is hard to install Amd Fire Pro series. I have tested a Radeon 6870. Unfortunately because of high power my hard drives started to fail. Then i immediately removed radeon 6870.

I hope quadro works nicely. On tge paper my power supply is more than enough but even a radeon 6870 or gtx 570 is a problem.!

What do you mean by "because of the high power my harddrives started to fail"?? wasn't the GPU getting enough power? how did you know? how did you know the drivers started to fail?

With Gtx 570, pc didn't start. Then i tested with radeon 6870, pc started sucesfully, after a few minutes, i pushed hard with Elements 3D plugin on after effects. It uses Gpu. Then i finished my test , i immediately restarted again, computer didnt start with radeon this time, i realized one of my drives failed, i removed it with radeon 6870 then i plugged my old quadro 3700. It worked. A few hours later i got another warning from motherboard. It was a memory failure, finally i have found a pair kingston ecc ram failure. Today i have sent them to Kingston. These problems started after radeon 6870. At full power something happened. I have lost a pair of ram. Now everything works nicely again.

Ok, its NOT the 6870s fault, its the PSU, the PSU you have sucks, coolermaster makes some of the crappies PSUs in this world, replace that PSU with a cheap Corsair TX650 and i guaranteed you 100% that your problems will be solved.

I asked for more power because i have calculated power cons. with an online power supply calculator. It says with quadro 4000 i need 650 watt power.

Damn...i forgot you had 2 CPUs.... buy the TX650

It is really interesting! I have 850 watt power supply which looks not enough my current rig. But you say replacing it with an 650 watt power supply will solve my problem. I really dont want to buy a power supply and return it again because of same problems. Is there any way to measure my computer power supply? Any software?

Your PSU MIGHT be rated to output 850w but thats definitely not true, a 850w PSU should be able to power all your hardware with ease but it cant even handle a 6870 without causing severe problems, this means that your PSU is faulty (its a really low quality PSU, coolermaster makes cheap PSUs) replacing it with a TX650 or TX750 will solve your problems.

ok! the TX750 is my first choice but the TX650 will do a good job too...if that's it then pick a best answer to close this thread

I have bought a Corsair Gold AX1200 :) I have found a 20 Euros promotion code with free shipping. There was a 50 Euros difference between AX850 vs AX1200. I think it is time to buy a powerful graphic card or cards...

Nice!!!!
