As per the title, I purchased a pre-owned i5 4670 CPU listed at its stock 3.4ghz speed.

I installed it and according to the mobo BIOS, CPU is running at 3800.84mhz.

Am I misreading it or has it literally been overclocked without me being informed?

If so, will I have to purchase an aftermarket cooler?

Its impossible for an end user to store an overclock in a CPU once its been removed from a motherboard, your CPU is indeed 3.4gh and turbo's itself upto 3.8ghz, thats what Intel designed it to do, so its working as intended, read this: http://ark.intel.com/products/75047/Intel-Core-i5-4670-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz

And no you wont need an aftermarket cooler, the stock cooler will work fine, unless you plan to overclock it yourself any further, then you will need an after market cooler.
