Hey! I've had a bit of a rollercoaster of a year. Here's the short version first:
I got a Zotac GTX 970 replaced by warranty. It works, but if I put it under heavy load (I've tested Civilization VI and The Turing Test), the computer shuts down and then restarts. No specific errors are found in the Event Viewer beyond "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
Specifications:
Intel Core i5-4440
16 GB Kingston HyperX RAM (8x2)
Biostar B85S3+ Motherboard
Zotac GeForce GTX 970 Dual Fan
Corsair VS550 Power Supply
Background:
I bought the power supply and the graphic card in March 2016. The graphic card worked fine until January 2017, which is when the fan started making squeaking noises. I got it replaced in February, and the replaced card ran fine, even under load, until July 2017, at which point it output no display whatsoever.
While messing with the motherboard (Gigabyte B85M-D3H) to try all my options, I broke off a capacitor near the PCI-E slot. Paranoid that this will damage everything else, I bought a new motherboard (Biostar B85S3+), and tested the graphic card on it, which confirmed the card wasn't working.
I got the card replaced this week, and while it seems to be running, loading heavy graphics (like even just 20-30 seconds of Civilization VI) seems to cause restarts. I'm having no problems when the graphic card is below 50% load.
What I'm thinking now:
...is to buy a Seasonic S12G-550W power supply, which seems to be semi-affordable in my area (most good PSUs are marked up here). It's still a bit costly, and I can live without heavy PC games for a while, so I'll only get it in a month or two. What I want to know is if there is anything else I should or could try.
Thanks for reading!
