Is my rig good enough for the GTX 1080 and 1070?

Hello, I want to replace my gtx 680 with the new 1080 or 1070, but i want to know if ill get any kind problem or bottlenecks?

The rig im currently running on is:

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 680
CPU: i7-2700k
Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3
Ram: 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3
Power Supply: Corsair TX850
SSD: HyperX 250GB
HDD: 1TB Western Digital
Liquid Cooling: Corsair H110
 


As of today it shouldn't be a problem. And if any bottlenecking occurs in the future, you can overclock it.
 
Actually, the guys above me are not telling the whole truth.
While it is true, you don't really need to upgrade and you can just overclock it, it's also true that the CPU will bottleneck a 980, let alone a 1080/1070, which are both more powerful than a 980 and I don't think overclocking will fix this problem.
It might improve your performance, but skylake will still be maybe 20% ahead of the overclocked sandy bridge.
 


That 20% difference will only apply if gaming at 1080p on a 144Hz monitor.
 


You're right, it wouldn't matter on a 60Hz monitor, but OP didn't mention what kind of monitor he has.

the cpu will bottlenck it get a i5 and 16gb ram please could you make a new thread on this :)
 


This is not entirely true. You can run into LOW SYSTEM MEMORY issues if have less system ram than VRAM in some games. This issue can come up if the the game caches a lot of containers and objects in system memory for later retrieval. If you want a GTX 1080 I strongly suggest you have at least 12GB of RAM, 4GB for the OS and other apps, and the remaining 8GB for VRAM allocation is larger games.
Open World games will often use a lot of system memory, up to as much VRAM as you have so that it does not have to read from your HDD/SDD to re-render a scene.
