Hello all.
I want to customize Windows 7 x64.
I got quote a decent hardware (i7 3770k). So performance is not much trouble. I have already installed and using rainmeter.
But I want me customization. I already know about patching uxtheme.dll for third party themes. But I wanna know how dangerous it is.
I know we are patching system files so it's not really good idea. But this file only is related to and controls Judy themes. So it shouldn't cause much trouble according to me.
So I wanna know, does it damage Windows? Like making it hang inspite of decent hardware and affecting apps and games negatively?

Solution
Patching it may not have negative impact as long as the person who supplied the patch knew what they were doing. But I would make sure I trust the person who supplied the patch due to the fact that a dll is just a chunk of code and if the person supplying the patch had other intentions than just changing the look of your system you might have some issues. Such as a backdoor into your system.

Solution
Step-1

Download Universal Theme Patcher.zip and extract it
Step-2

Open “Universal Theme Patcher” unzipped folder there you will find “UniversalThemePatcher-x64″ and “UniversalThemePatcher-x86″. So, choose any one of those to install according to your system requirement.
Step-3

After completing installation process Universal Theme Patcher window will get open where it gives option to patch uxtheme.dll, themeui.dll and themeservice.dll files automatically by clicking on “Patch” button followed by each file, so do that to go further.

Note: If any problem occurs by patching up the files then Restore all three files to their previous state through “Restore” buttons.
Step-4

Restart your system.
Step-5

Download any third party theme for Windows 7 and unzip its folder and open it.
Step-6

Copy “.theme” file and its “theme folder to %windir%\Resources\Themes folder.
Step-7

Now, right click on Desktop click “Personalize” option, it will open Personalization where you will find your newly added third party theme, ready to apply.

Now, try it out and install any custom theme on Windows 7 system and enjoy.

No it's not dangerous i been doing it for over a year no issues what so ever!

It's totally safe if you use a patch and/or program from a reliable source. You can trust HackPack which includes UniversalThemePatcher and other important tools. It's the best and newest. Download and install HackPack. Extract files and then click on Patcher and install UniversalThemePatcher and patch the 3 .dll files and restart your computer. Then reopen your extracted Hack Pack and install Theme Manager to easily install 3rd party themes. Theme Manager is very easy to use and YouTube has instruction videos. Once you open Theme Manager there is a link to Deviantart to get 3rd party themes.
