I have a old tower with a ASRock X399 Taichi motherboard where I have 4 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 Slots link to full spec

I don't have a very powerful graphics card because I don't play games, but I want to start using Ollama and this uses the GPU NVidia graphics cards and some AMD graphics cards.

Anyway I need to buy a graphics card for my old tower. But when I look at websites selling graphics cards they are PCIe version 5.0 is this backward compatible?

I just need a cheap GPU that will work on my motherboard which is also compatible with Ollama, does anyone have any advice for me for what is compatible?

Be careful with older PCIe 3.0 x16 slots and newer cards that are PCIe 4.0 but are x8. You will lose substantial performance if you use a newer x8 card in a PCIe 3.0 x16 slot.

Other than that, all newer PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 x16 cards will work just fine in a PCIe 3.0 x16 slot. With a possible 0-4% loss in performance.
