Hi,

Can the Toshiba Satellite A105-S4384 laptop support SSDs at SATA3 speed?
It comes with a 160GB HDD as standard. I would like to replace it with a 240 or 256GB SSD, but I need to be sure SATA3 and AHCI will work.

Please help me.

Solution
This is the laptop running XP, that is used for email and printing?

Windows XP does not know how to effectively treat a SSD.
It will work, but XP does not know about TRIM.
It will try to defrag, which is strongly ill advised for a solid state drive.
So make the old laptop just be a print server.
Printer shared from the XP.

Run all her applications, incl email, from their better system.
Click Print, and it sends that print job to the old laptop and the printer.
It would be too burdensome for Mom to run two computers every time. She only deals with simple things on the computer.

I will try to install Windows XP 64 bit on a new disk. I will take this current Windows XP 32 bit system out of the laptop along with the HDD so that I can reinsert it in case of failure. However, a strange thing with the drivers for this laptop for the XP 64 bit version - this page does not distinguish between 32 and 64 versions:
https://support.dynabook.com/support/modelHome?freeText=1495919&osId=3333642
Do I mean that this laptop has the same drivers for both 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows XP?

It seems that Toshiba Official Support does not have Windows XP 64 bit drivers for this laptop. Here is a transcript of a conversation with them:

(18:33:40) Andrew Purio said: Welcome to Dynabook Chat Support. My name is Andrew. Let me check your concern.
(18:34:46) You said: Hi Andrew, I am waiting.
(18:38:28) Andrew Purio said: Upon checking the information from the support website sir. The website for windows XP drivers is only available for 32bit OS. It means sir that the 64bit is currently not available.
(18:39:11) Andrew Purio said: If you are going to check the option if there is a 64bit available it will show up as Windows XP 64bit like the Windows 7 64bit.
(18:40:41) You said: I would like to install Windows XP 64 on this laptop. Where do i get 64 bit drivers?
(18:42:49) Andrew Purio said: Drivers is not available from the website for 64bit. The other option that we have sir a is via local repair store. Like bestbuy. They might still have the drivers for Windows XP OS.
(18:45:14) You said: When writing via local repair store you mean a local computer repair shop in my country?
(18:45:24) Andrew Purio said: That's right sir.
(18:46:20) You said: I'm afraid it will be very difficult to find drivers for such an old operating system and for such an old laptop ...
(18:47:21) Andrew Purio said: Your actually right about it sir. But some store still keeping those drivers. That's the reason i suggest it. Sorry for that one sir.
(18:47:39) You said: But you, as the official Toshiba support, could not provide me with such drivers?
(18:48:07) You said: Just search and share.

(18:49:23) Andrew Purio said: No Sir. We are also base it from the support website. Maybe its just a to old OS sir.
(18:50:39) You said: I suppose the drivers for Windows 7 64 bit will not match the installed Windows XP 64 bit?
(18:50:50) Andrew Purio said: Yes Sir.
(18:52:01) You said: So thank you and best regards from Poland, it is such a country in Europe. :)
(18:52:35) Andrew Purio said: Thank you also sir for understanding. Have a great day sir.

So it seems that the idea of installing XP 64 on this laptop needs to be thrown into the trash.
Unless one of you tells me where to find such drivers?

It may be as you write that Toshiba never created drivers for Windows XP 64 for this laptop... 🙁
So I will have to deal with the fact that the Mozilla browser takes 30 to 60 seconds to start up.

I am still wondering if I could install a different version of Mozilla or a different browser on this laptop. I am currently using Mozilla version 52.9.0 (32 bit) which is correct for Windows XP 32.

The manufacturer claims that this is the last version of Mozilla for Windows XP:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/end-support-windows-xp-and-vista

Can you advise something?
Am I using the correct version of Mozilla?
Is there a faster third-party browser for Windows XP, which will start in faster than a minute?

Sitting next to me, I have a 2009 era low end Toshiba laptop.
2.2GHz Celeron 900, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD.
Running 64bit Win 10 Pro.
FireFox 72.0.2 32bit

Opening FF takes about 25 sec.
Another thing...in the FF Home section, what things are on that by default? Snippets, News, all that junk.
Turn that stuff OFF.

What do you mean by Firefox Home? Do you mean what appears on the start page?

In this laptop in Mozilla, there is always one tab, in which the mailbox on the website is loaded when you open the browser (this website remembers the login details, so Mom does not have to enter the login and password every time, it is more convenient for her).

Parameters of this laptop:
RAM: 3GB (1 and 2GB DDR2 PC5300)
Processor: Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T5500 1.66GHz 64-bit
SATA1 HDD: 160GB (two partitions)
Operating system: Windows XP Media Center 32 bit SP3 PL
B&W laser printer attached: HP LaserJet 1000
Connected external monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 19"

I just ran a test. About 9 seconds after clicking the Mozilla icon, a browser window appears with a blank white background. The mailbox starts loading after about 20 seconds, is over after 42 seconds. I closed the browser window, waited 10 seconds, and restarted it. This time the window appeared after 3 seconds, and the entire mailbox was loaded after 30 seconds. It's just that Mom doesn't need to open Mozilla a second time, it's just important for her to open it once.

I did another test - I entered the address of my personal website WWW.pacut.eu in the only browser tab. This website is built on the simplest HTML. This time the browser window also opened after a few seconds and the page loaded after 23 seconds.

So it looks like I can't get any better here than having Mozilla open with the mailbox page in about 40 seconds, sometimes 60 seconds.

I am using the same WiFi network, typing these words on a fast laptop at the moment (the specification of this computer is in my signature) and all pages open in an instant. I use this WiFi network with my parents also on my smartphone, TV, Blu-ray player and my parents use it on their smartphones. It's all right, no problems.

Well...it looks like it just comes down to that old crappy system.
You can throw time and money at it. RAM, reinstall with 64bit XP....but you're just polishing a turd.

You know the real answer...a cheap laptop from the last few years, and an applicable inexpensive printer.

Of course. However, as a family, we have a fondness for this HP LaserJet 1000 printer purchased in 2003. In this thread I tried to speed up Mozilla's opening in various ways, but I have exhausted the topic. This discussion allowed me to gain new knowledge about this laptop and answer any questions that arose.

This is a very professional forum that I came across by accident recently. Certainly I will try to advise you here more than once, using your knowledge and experience.

Thank you for your time. :)

I had a very nice Dell 3100cn, color laser. Same vintage as yours.
Could not force it to work with Win 10. So it had to go.

The funny thing, I couldn't even give it away for free.
craigslist ads, no one wanted it because it didn't have a scanner.
Specific text in the ad - "This printer does not have a scanner." Repeated phone/text - "Does it have a scanner?"

Habitat for Humanity donation, nope. The head guy said "We have a room full of printers. Don't need another one."

:)

This parent's printer is in perfect condition, as if it had been bought yesterday. No service problems. Only the black toner cartridge needs to be replaced every few years. We use a good replacement, which costs about $ 8-11 in Poland.
