Is the 4970k meant for z97 chipset?

I'm willing to spend the extra money on a processor that overclocks better. It would be like 30 dollars more. Will the 4970k be a better overclocker as well and stay cooler because of the improved TIM?

The best for the Z97 chipset currently is the i7-4790K.

It will perform slightly better as the TIM helps it run cooler, but I have read reports that they are getting low overclocks with Devils Canyon, so if the 4770K is $30 cheaper, go with that instead.

The Z97 motherboards are ideal, as they will support the upcoming 5th generation Broadwell processors, alongside Devil's Canyon too; which you already most likely know and includes the 4790K. Intel implies that the Devil's Canyon are better at overclocking, "enhanced performance and overclocking." (source) The improved TIM will most likely keep the CPU cooler, and as a result of the CPU being cooler, theoretically that should be another additional factor indicating that the DC can overclock greater.

Personally I believe it'll be better at overclocking than what we currently have. However I can't guarantee anything, as Devil's Canyon is still in early stages. We can't say for certain if the improved TIM will be able achieve greater cooling or not, or whether it's just minor.

That is of course all from my knowledge. I'm sure others on this forum have more expertise in this area than me.

It's the fastest out of the box. However, Devil's Canyon has something weird with it, so if you plan on overclocking, you will get further with the old i7-4770K.

HAHAHA! I was like "wait...how?". And the other reason I wanted the 4790k is because they have new Asus Maximus VII to replace the VI.

4970K is faster per Ghz especially when overclocking stock 4970K is as fast as 4.2Ghz 4770k
