Is the CM Hyper 212 EVO enough for an i7-7700K ?

Will I get good temps with it ? Can I add a second fan to the evo ? will it improve temps ? Can I OC the 7700K with a modded 212 EVO ?

If EVO is not enough for OCing, what coolers do you recommend that let you OC the 7700K...

Is OCing even worth it ? should I get the regular 7700 over 7700K ?

If I OC the 7700K, how much performance will I get compared with the regular 7700 ?

I used the bottleneck calculator and it reports that my i5-6500 is too little for a GTX 1080 ...but a 7700K is perfect for it...

The Hyper 212 would be sufficient with no overclocking. Warm temps are not destructive. Second fan on Hyper 212 doesn't make much difference. Maybe 1-2C at best. I'd save that money for a better cooler.

Your case can fit most any air cooler.

No overlcocking the Hyper 212 Evo or Cryorig H7 is enough for the most part. The H7 will cool slightly better than the Hyper 212 Evo. Adding a second fan might make them equal.

I've had my i7-7700K for about a year now. I started with the Cryorig H7; which is very similar to the Hyper 212 Evo.

It was enough for 4.5GHz.. until I played AC Origins. Temps would spike to 85-86C, and would stay around 76-79C. That may be okay and the CPU may not experience any degradation seeing those temps on a regular basis. But, I wanted better cooling. So, I bought a Noctua NH-D15. Temps improved seeing 75-76C max playing AC Origins.

I tried overclocking and it was okay with the NH-D15, but I couldn't even run 4.9GHz at 1.35V without seeing 87-90C in Prime95. I eventually delidded my CPU and used liquid metal. Temps improved dramatically and I could run 5.0GHz at 1.4V and stay well below 80C in Prime95.

Gaming performance is basically the same though; not much difference in 4.5GHz and 5.0GHz. Now I want an i7-8700K or 9700K, but my 7700K is delidded and not worth as much if it weren't. It was a lot of work and not really worth it.

Conclusion, a Hyper 212 Evo would be enough for 9/10 games at stock speeds. I would suggest something slightly better, like a Cryrorig H5. What case do you have? Height restrictions will determine which CPU coolers you can use.

P.S.: Bottleneck calculators are theoretical; not exactly the best reference but I suppose it would give you a general idea of where you need to be. i7-7700K would be great for a GTX 1080, an i5-6500 would be enough for a lot of games, but some games would need the i7 to keep from losing performance.

What motherboard do you have, if you don't have a Z170/Z270 there's no reason to get a K chip. But to answer your first question, no the 212 really isn't enough for any real overclock, you'll need a larger cooler.

Also the 6500 will be plenty of CPU for a 1080 so you really don't need an upgrade to begin with.

Seeing how the i7-7700K runs 300MHz faster than the non-K, I would say the K-series is actually okay to get if have a non-Z board and want the best performance.

Ok , I think I will stick to my evo, Do some mods and check the temps, if I get good temps I call it a day...I really don't want to take out the motherboard...

If I get bad temps I will get a decent cooler...thanks everyone..
