I don't really know anything about power supplies, but I've heard that Corsairs builder series are pretty cheap and not worth it. So help me out here please.

Plus, should I get a surge protecter? In my area (D.C), there isn't really a lot of power outages, only during storms. And those happens 3-4 times a year.

The CX series, manufactured by Channel Well, are great for basic builds and are very cost-effective in that sense. However, they aren't as efficient in high performance builds like gaming builds as their bigger siblings: GS, TX, HX, and AX.

As for surge protectors, I'd recommend you getting them.

First of all, I don't know what PSU you have. For the CX, it has less amperage on its volt rails than the other 4 that I listed. It also has a smaller fan than compared to the TX, HX, and AX. Less reliable on heavy load. It all comes down to voltage regulation, noise, and how well it handles heavier load.
