Is the CPU good enough?

Hi,
I'm think of buying a custom PC with the following specs:

1) Are the CPU and GPU good enough for running games on fairly high settings?
2) what sort of games would it be capable of running?
3) Are there any aspects I could downgrade to save some money without affecting performance?

Drop the heatsink, the stock one is fine.
Drop the thermal paste.
Get a generic ODD, no need for bluray.
Drop the soundcard.
Get 8GB of ram.

With the money saved from the above, you can afford a better PSU (as low end corsair units are Tier3), you can upgrade the GPU to something like a 380, and possibly get an SSD.

You will not need an aftermarket CPU cooler, and you will not need aftermarket thermal paste. Also, what are your thoughts behind the sound card?

Use the money saved, on a better power supply.

Get a generic ODD, no need for bluray.

Maybe OP needs a blu-ray for physical discs. Not everyone is using horribly compressed Netflix you know 😛

I would rather use standard disks and digital for the sake of more gaming performance 😀

The optical he has in the list is a standard DVD writer.

Just checked that build & its over £700 on PC specialist with the cheapest case - that's not a great deal even including windows 10 mate IMO.

Yeah, the exact build I did cost £750. Could you recommend some cheaper alternatives with similar/better spec?

You're obviously been bedazzled by the recent spate of PC specialist adverts on uktv?

Don't be, they put about as much care & attention into a build as any other mainstream builder which isn't a lot & charge a lot of money for doing it.

You'll get about the same kind of build quality at aria but for less money with more powerful components.

This is just over £600 at aria.co.UK & has a 4590 which is slightly faster & a 960 which also is.

Yes you'll have to install windows & fit the GPU & wireless card yourself but that's worth the £150 saving IMO.


Replace the PSU with a better model when the year warranty is nearly up & you'll be good for awhile with that

Nice, the issue is I'm inexperienced with fitting components and don't trust myself to not mess it up. So do you know of any other PC building websites where they build for you?
