Is the I5-2310 2.9ghz really that bad?

I've got what I'd consider a medium-end computer, probably closer to the higher-end of the spectrum (I.E if White = Low end and Black = High End, my computer is dark gray in my book).

I5-2310 2.9ghz
8GB DDR3 1333 Mhz
Sapphire 7850 Oc Edition - can be further OCd to 1000/1350 Mhz comfortably
Corsair GS 700 Watt
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
1920x1080P View Sonic

Several times I've gone over my specs with some friends, or just random folk, and occasionally they'll give the response "Eww, I5-2310, get an I5-2500k bro."

While I understand that the difference is the extra 0.3 Ghz per core, and of course the ability to overclock, the I5-2310 isn't really that bad to where it deserves an "Eww," right?

All Core i# processors are excellent units. They're just being haters and thinking the 2500k is better because it can be overclocked and yours cant. Some people don't want to overclock and some dont need to because of how software is so far behind modern computers thanks to consoles.

No difference other than overclocking. Just tell them to shut up and enjoy your build.

The issue isnt that the Intel® Core™ i5-2310 is so bad but that the Intel Core i5-2500K is so good. In the history of our company I would say it is one of the all time best processors for its times that we have ever released. While the Intel Core i5-2500K with its clock speed of 3.3GHz is good the thing that really sets it apart is with a good cooler you can easily overclock it to well over 4GHz.

If you budget or you wont allow yourself to overclock then the Intel Core i5-2310 will work fine for you.

Very true. The 2500K will be marginally faster. The 2310 is very good.

I purchased a pre-built ASUS Cm6730 last Christmas for ~$400 since it was the best value I could find (came with Windows 7, 8gb DDR3, i5-2310, 1TB hard drive), even when taking into consideration purchasing my own parts and building it myself, and have been upgrading it since.

Basically I'm contemplating whether or not the I5-2500k, or even the I5-3570k (I'd have to get a new motherboard, which COULD also mean a new windows key...) would be worth it.

I absolutely agree with that. Nothing wrong at all with the 2310, but the 2500K is an all time great CPU and one that will go down in history as one of the best to have ever been produced (taking time periods, prices, etc. into consideration).

Stay with what you have until you really feel that you're being hamstrung by the 2310. No real reason to upgrade to a 2500K/3570K right now.

as far as gaming goes your actually doing a lot better than most . They are in fact being haters as suggested above.

i just got an i5 2310. i by far see a need to even come close to saying eww about it. maybe the temps on a stock cooler sure... but the cpu itself is pretty damn fast, its not a high end 500$ i7 but im pretty sure this cpu can handle pretty much anything without becoming a bottleneck for any system to my best knowledge. id stick with the 2310 till prices drop more. judging by intel, still selling brand new 775 socket quad cores for around 200 bux, thats not any time soon.
