Is the i5-6600k still good for gaming

I was wondering if the i5-6600k will bottleneck future pascal cards such as the 1080 what ever they are going to be called. Also is the 4 cores still going to be enough for 1080p gaming for the next 2 years or so?

the 2500k was released in 2011

people still dont need to upgrade from that, overclocking it has extended it's life to this point, and probably for another cpu release cycle unless something drastic changes.


I imagine a 6600k will be the same.

It won't bottleneck those cards, one of the best CPUs for gaming. 4 strong cores of it is enough not for just 2 years. 6600K provides overclocking option, making it a powerful CPU that'll compete well for beyond 3-4 years.

You are asking if the newest i5 will last 2 years?! Of course, probably 4 years or more. I have the i5-2500k (4+years old) and I still have no reason to upgrade. i5 is excellent for 1080p gaming.

to the op intel stopped there tic/toc 18 month cpu cycle as brodwell and skylake took then so long to get there yields up. your now going to see there cpu stay around a lot longer so that intel make money on the new chipset size.

I use an i5 2500K and have no reason to upgrade at all. When I do, I'll probably upgrade to a 2600K or 3770K, as they still offer all the performance I need and are dirt cheap to buy.

I game at 1440P and 60fps with a GTX 770 4GB and 16GB RAM.

Since 2013 I have been using the Core i5 4430 3.0 GHz (locked) and still playing games at 1080p/60fps ultra settings with 8 GB RAM and GTX 970 4 GB. I can see my PC with it at least at the end of this "console generation". You will be fine, get more out from you CPU. Put your money in the piggy bank for the future when you really need an upgrade.
