I am thinking about upgrading my computer by putting in an XFX radeon hd 7870. I am 17 and i dont have enough money to buy or even build my own computer. But I have never played games on it before.

So i just want to know how well will the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor perform with more modern games like Skyrim, CoDs, and Battlefield 3.

Thanks

I'll just let you in on this little piece of information. I actually just got done rebuilding a friends system, my older E8400 based system. Matched with a 550Ti, it's not bad. Now when I had it, I clocked it pretty decently with my modified GeminII cooler paired with two high CFM 120mm fans from silverstone. I got some really nice clocks out of it and at the time it was paired with an 8800GTS 512mb. The E8400 was one of the first .45nm chips if I remember correctly and I had a good batched chip. I did play all the hot games on that rig after I built it. It was retired to him on the cheap to help him get his Diablo 3 on without being on an old dell craptop with integrated craphics. However, the 8800GTS decided to retire itself...

I have a friend that runs The Crew on ultra ~40fps @ 1366x768p using this cpu + an R7 240 OC Edition.

I bought the Q6600 in 2008 and still running it with 8GB DDR2 Ram with the CPU clocked at 3.4GHz. I am getting an average of 45+ FPS on BF4 @ everything on Ultra without AA. Cooling the CPU with a Noctua NH D15.

Hey Quick question i have a Dell Optiplex 745 , Can i run a Q6600 , with a ASUS GeForce GT 520 (FERMI) 1GB 64-bit DDR3 ? I have 4 gb DDR2 of ram, and the power supply is at 300 Watts, I am trying to build a gaming computer on a budget, Any tips?

for running a Q6600, you will need to make sure your motherboard has a LGA775 socket. The GT520 is not particularly good for gaming as it does not have enough processing power and also the Fermi architecture (nvidia 500 series) is not particularly very power efficient. I think a better idea would be to look for used, more powerful cards if you want to make a build for cheap.

I have the LGA 755 Socket, I was reading that the Q6600 is the best processor i can get for my board, I am just unsure on graphics card. The game im looking to play is Star Wars : The Old Republic,

How is this? ASUS AMD Radeon HD 6670 (EAH6670/DIS/1GD5) 1 GB GDDR5 SDRAM PCI Express x16

Well, the 6670 should work for that game, but still not the card to get even if you are buying second hand and are planning to get other games in the future.

So far i have been playing GTA5, Entropia, X2 The threat, DOTA2, Star Wars the Old Republic, Car Mechanic Simulator 2015, SecondLife, Arc: Survival Evolved and Half Life 2. For StarWars TOR, i had to buy a wide screen LCD with higher resolution as StarWars require minimum 1200x1600 resolution to run/ play/ display the Login screen/ Loading screen. Arc: Survival Evolved runs so damn SLOW on my current GT430 1GB 128bit DDR3 like 3 to 7 Frames per second BUT at least does not crash.
Dell Optiplex 760's motherboard setup inside CPU case is like this

For my PC parts requirements i refer to the following websites which are local sites.

So far, GT430 is sufficient enough to run the games i play. Doesnt feel any need to upgrade it with a GTX XYZ card anytime soon. But maybe later when the prices goes down and i can find a bargain deal from some place local.
Ohh and the prices of a Q6600 computer system with bare minimum components has been dropped by about 20~30 dollars. So its as inexpensive as a core2duo 2.9GHz was when i bought it.

Just a noob question. I have an asus p5b-vm motherboard here and I am planning to buy an core 2 quad q6600. Can I overclock this processor with my motherboard? Thanks!.

ar the good old q6600. Yes It will work but won't get you very far. make sure you have ddr3 install with it. do not use the EVGA motherboard on the Q6600. get an after market cooling since you are in a budget you can try the evo212 (it about 30buk and when you upgrade later you can still keep the heatsink)
dont over pay for the computer. it not worth it. only pay for the part thats you can reuse. example hdd, heatsink, PSU, case. things that you can't reuse would be CPU and Motherboard. item you maybe able to reuse is RAM. even ddr3 may come to an end soon in few years time. so don't pay too much for the Q6600. you should be able to play most game with mid setting with the pc if you have an good video card.

LOL don't hijack someone post like this. ask your own question on a new topic .
by the way about your question. The VM is not a good choice of overclocking. you maybe able to do a bit of oc? maybe up to 3.0? and with the ddr2 ram. you won't get far with this pc anyways. your ram speed will bottleneck your video card.

don't lazy just google "Asus P5B-VM SE OC capabilities"

So, I'm running a venerable XPS 420 with Q6600 and 8 GB RAM (667 MHz). The biggest performance boost I got with this PC...an SSD with upgraded 64 bit Windows 8.1. The RAM upgrade had little impact as I was at 4 GB when originally purchased (with 32 bit VISTA).

I also upgrade from 8800GT (at original purchase) to an ASUS GTX 550Ti. My power supply (DELL 425 W) can handle it well and GPU temperatures are OK.

I use the PC for media and general productivity. When it comes to gaming, I'm running World of Tanks at 1920x1080 plus full details at 32fps.

I also OC using software called "SET FSB 2.2.134.98", with the clock generator in the software's menu selected to "CV184-2APAG". With this I can eek out 2.8Ghz from the stock 2.4GHz.

I recall the Q6600 can also be physically OC'd to 3.0+Ghz with a PIN mod. There are a couple of posts that explain this in detail, with pics. However, I am not adding a new CPU cooler at this point, so the software OC is adequate for my needs.

Q6600 is very good with OC. it easy to get to 3.2 and with some time to push it you can even get higher. but OC = good psu and motherboard. you have to check that yourself if it will work on your case.
what will be limiting you to game is the DDR2 ram. I had the same rig as my last PC with 2x8800gt later upgrade to 480GTX. you will see some bottleneck caz of the ram. but you can still get by with most game.
make sure you don't use stock cooling if you are doing any OC. if you are on a budget a evo212 can sometime be under 30buk.

I've been having good luck with the Q6600, so far. I haven't really played PC games since Wing Commander 3 was new, so it has been an eye-opening experience.
Anyhow, I got a real bargain on a co-worker's left over PC parts, including a modular 750 ps, a Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L mb, 4gb ddr2, a 160gb hdd, and a decent NZXT case to put it all in. I added a cheap optical drive, Win7 SP1, and 2 240gb ssds (another new thing to me, had to try them out, amazing how cheap it all is now). All of this came together at the same time that I got an unbelievable deal on a nib Asus STRIX-GTX960-DC2OC-4GD5...I never intended to get such a powerful card, it just fell in my lap and I couldn't pass it up.
Thus far I have been mostly reminiscing with games past, like Civilization 3 and Sins of a Solar Empire. The machine has no problem running these, of course. I have been playing Starpoint Gemini 2, which is coincidentally like Wing Commander, with all of the video settings set to maximum, and the only problem that I had was my 6 year old wireless mouse cutting out during combat. I fixed that problem today with a new G502 mouse...it's crazy how much I have missed out on in the years in between, but now I get the pleasure of catching up with the rest of the world.
I'm pretty confident that this machine is very capable of running a great deal of games, I only hesitate when the game requirements call for i5/i7 processors...but that still leaves a lot of games. Overclocking sounds interesting, though. That may be something to try when I get bored with what I've built...

I did finally do the PIN MOD (aka BSEL mod) per the following site:

http://hubpages.com/technology/Get-more-from-your-Quad-Core-Q6600

Was very easy; took me no more than 25 minutes. As I have the DELL XPS420, the X38 motherboard is proprietary and the BIOS is locked. As such the PIN mod was the only option to fool the PC into thinking it has a 1333 Mhz FSB requirement, as opposed to the 1067Mhz default. Note, the Dell X38 is capable of 1333Mhz. This brought the bus to 333Mhz and the CPU to 9x that...or 3.0Ghz.

I then boosted performance to 3.1Ghz using SetFSB, with the CV184-2APAG clock generator selected and FSB slider set to 295/380 (default with PIN mod is 283/380, without pin mod its down at 213/380).

Now PC runs 3 degrees hotter at ~46C, up to 68C when the Intel CPU burner test is set to HIGH. VID is now 1.325V when clock is 9x.

I also OC'd the GTX 550Ti card by boosting voltage to 1.112V with +104Mhz for CPU clock, +36Mhz for mem clock. Stable at these settings. Temps at 36c min load to 62 C max load.

Heaven Benchmark is now 591.

Will mod further with XPS 720 3-loop cooler to replace XPS 420 2-loop cooler. Same dimensions, just necessary to drill three more holes in the top of the plastic mounting bracket/shroud to make room for the extra cooling loop. $7 on eBay with an additional 120cfm fan..not bad!!!!

Hey, this old PC might even go a bit longer, given this noticeable performance improvement!

That monster GPU for the Q6600 is certainly bottle-necked...but you can relieve some of that pent up capability with a decent overclock. I have read about others going to 3.2 Ghz with stock air coolers...much higher with aftermarket setups. Depends on each chip, system, etc. But the Q6600 should easily make 3.0Ghz with adequate cooling.

The biggest improvements with my upgrade on this old horse. 1) SSD, 2) nice 28 in. HD display, 3) a decent GPU (today I would go for GTX750ti as best match...or simply get something over-matched that could easily be used on next PC in 1-2 years...like the GTX 960), 4) moderately OC'd CPU and GPU (with all risks/caveats understood), 5) 64Bit OS on the SSD, to take advantage of greater than 3.6GB of RAM.

I still use a 7870 for 1080p gaming and it is great. But I have an i5-3570k... I think your cpu will slow it down, but the video card is still pretty good for 1080p. It is about 5% slower than R9-370.

If u have a good mobo and fine overclocking knowledge, you will do it without bottlenecks !

wiill u plz tell me to how overclock the cpu plz plz reply me as soon as possible Bro
