Is the upgrade worth the cost?

So I am planning on building either a 4k or 144hz gaming setup. Most likely probably 4k and I am upgrading my gpu to a 1080ti and my monitor to probably a 4k one.

The issue is my cpu and mobo are slightly older I have the white version of the Asus z170-A and an i5-6500. I'm not sure if it's truly really necessary to get a brand new mobo and new i7. I don't stream at all, I only play games or watch movies/YouTube.

Would it really be worth the hassle of selling and replacing those parts for new ones or could I roll with what I have with not much difference?

Depends on the monitor size you are used to. 24" 1080p to 24" 2160p; not worth it in the least. Going from a small monitor to a 30+inch 4K will be noticeable. Not earth shattering, but noticeable. I'd say in the 25-27" range 1440p is more sensible.
Ok thank you. I have considered the 1080 144hz route but I'm not sure if its really worth it. The only fps I play is overwatch most other games I play are mmos or single player story games.

It's hard deciding which makes a bigger difference right now I have 1080p 60fps but the 4k route seemed tempting for my type of usage. Will I notice a big difference between 1080 and 4k?
