is there a log or event file that records "black screen" crash cause?

about 1145 last night [7 oct 2017] my system suddenly crashed. for brief seconds, a notice of a system error displayed and then all went black. 'Twas so fast, I couldn't read it. Has recurred about once each three to four days (mostly when I'm not paying attention -- system runs 18/7).

reboot -- all seemed normal. rebooted to the normal windows entry, not to error or safe mode request.

all temps were under 50 [C]. windows memory test tool said all good. all updates and drivers up to date. Anti-virus/anti-malware up to date and working. Firewall engaged. Windows blank screen and power down on idle controls both set to "never".

Win 7 x64 Pro. gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 [v1]. i3-2105. 8 Gb Crucial ram MSI R7 260X. H80 liquid cooling. WD 750 Gb HDD. Corsair 650w psu 80+ Bronze. system is about 5 years old [x the gpu which is only 3 years old].

is there a way to search the HDD for any files written at about the crash time? I'm hoping to find a log or event file somewhere, written by Windows or BIOS or mobo, that describes what happened and what caused it [divide by zero?, memory reference out of range?, unreadable memory? what else is there?]

[This every once in a while crash has been driving me nuts for past month or so.]

Any other advice on how to detect this problem or correct it would be welcome ....
