Is there a photo printer that can do what I want?

I thought I'd done my homework and researched it long and hard, but I've come to the conclusion that people have different ideas about what is acceptable quality and what is not. I bought an Epson Stylus Photo 820 because of all the glowing reviews it got, except for a few that complained about clogged print heads and ink usage. Neither of those is a concern for me, I just wanted good quality, which this printer cannot deliver (at least the one in my possession). Trying to print some photos from Photoshop, I can not get a reasonable quality printout that leaves detail in the shadows without blowing out the skin tones and highlights. I've spent more than $100 buying print cartridges and photo papers and nothing can do it. I can get nothing close to the original I scanned it from. I have calibrated my monitor and it looks great on the monitor, but I can't get the results from the printer. I have e-mailed Epson tech support and gotten no reply. Do I need to exchange it for one that's not malfunctioning or is there a printer out there that can print actual quality photos and what is it? Grain is less important than tones and accurate colors. Thanks.

Mmmm, I have a DeskJet 5550 and it's really good in that sense, I use it to print family photos. Only issue is I hate the motherfcker because when I have to print large black and white text files at max speed, it screws up at around 9 pages and takes the whole load of paper and spits it out with smeared ink. Good for slower high quality printing tho (may need to get a laser printer and set it as a network printer for b/w tasks).

All the things I really like to do are either illegal, immoral, or fattening.

We use a Photo 830 printer at work, and the piccies are really good, EXCEPT when using Ilford's printasia photo glossy paper, it leaves grain marks and streaks on the paper, we have a $9000 Fuji thermal printer too, and the quality is similar, We switched to Epson paper for the 830, it cost us more but its really good paper

Me and Seven of Nine, Ohhh Yeah
