Or do I need to recycle them? Is there a recommended way of removing data if i recycle them?

Dban for hdd.
Secure erase for ssd.

I notice these sites have a disclaimer about not being perfect against protecting from someone recovering your data. Should I take that with a grain of salt?

Do the wipes, I know with Dban you can pick how many times you want it to wiped.

After wiping download some FREE LEGAL large files, such as image files of Linux, and you can fill the drive with them if you want to write real data over all the sectors again.

I think you will be good. I personally like to use old drives for backups or 2nd drives in my PC. Sunk cost, and used drives in my experience don't bring much coin my way.
