I built a computer last year that does not have a bay for an optical drive. Since my old car still uses CDs, I wanted to get a CD/DVD drive that I could use to make CDs for the car. I have looked at many of the drives on various sites and most of them have cables that are only 12"-18" long and state that they may not work with an extension cable. If I put the drive on my desk, I will have to use an extension cable to reach my computer which is on a shelf to the side of my desk. Does anyone know of a drive that has a longer cable or will work with an extension cable?

The issue is not the drive using the longer cable, it's the fact that USB does not support long cables properly without a booster, and if those disks use dual connection for power that means that they would be even more sensitive to the distance due to the power draw. In my experience, a USB cable is OK to about 6 feet before it gets flaky with some cases. You can just buy a longer cable, it does not need to come with the drive nor do you need to use an extension cable. And "may not work" does not mean they won't work, just that they won't help you if it does not.
