Is there any problems with compatibility with my PC and my desired GPU?

Solution

All of the nvida pascal cards like 1050, 1060,1070,1080,etc support DX12, Vulkan, OpenGL, DX11, DX10, DX9, and probably older APIs I dont even know about. You dont need to worry so much about API's if you have a 1050 and...

Whats your current psu. Also ditch the 270 just get a gtx 1050ti same price much better.

Power supply? CPU? I also agree with the above poster 270 is not a good choice for the money. Though I would recommend a 1050 on the cheap side and an rx 470 if you can spend a bit more. Also that case is small form factor I'm not sure if one of these dual slot ATX gpu's is going to fit in that case.

If you have a decent psu now and the cpu is i3 or better should you be fine.

About it fitting the case, which one do you have? The smallformfactor or the tower ... in the tower should it be fine, the smallformfactor seems only to take low height gpu's.In the smallformfactor would that R9 not fitt.
The smallformfactor would be able to use this,

I'm assuming you have the full tower version of the Lenovo? Because any other version you would not be able to upgrade your PSU (and no go on any GPU).

The R9 270 would fit but I would not bother, its old and outdated probably hard to find too. If you're buying new, as suggested above the 1050ti is probably the same price and WAY faster.

I've got the full tower version yeah. I wasn't looking to buy it brand new, just something simple to buy now until I find a better one but do you think it's worth waiting to get the 1050ti? I can get an R9 270 for £60 now, second hand.

Can't quite remember exactly which one it is but I know it's a 600w. It runs my GTX 650 at the moment. About the 1050ti, I was looking to buy the R9 270 second hand for £60. Do you think I should wait and buy the 1050ti or get the R9 270 and then go bigger in a few months?

I recommend you get the 1050ti because if you buy it lets say 6 months later then you'll just have a r9 270 collecting dust. Can you look at your psu and post it's name because I know of psu's that say 900w but can't even reach 200w without dying.

I looked on ebay and found the one I bought. It's this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182044159536?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
I know it's not a proper branded one but I haven't had any trouble since buying it.

Ok the bad news is that PSU is junk. The good news is if you aren't pushing it (which you are not nearly pushing it to its claimed "600w" you have a chance of being fine.

As for buying an R9 270 only to upgrade later, its a waste of money, if you save up a little more for a 1050ti now you have an infinitely better GPU and you aren't stuck with a £60 paperweight when you have enough to upgrade.

What type of things would push the PSU? Like make is overheat and stuff?
Also I found this 1050 which is a mini version, but not the Ti: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zotac-GeForce-1050-Mini-Graphics/dp/B01M4MIU94/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1481480714&sr=1-2-fkmr0&keywords=gtx+1050ti+mini
I only really want to play games such as GTA 5, Overwatch, The Witcher 3 etc.. Not completely bothered about running them on ultra and trying to get an amazing experience (if you know what I mean?)

By push I mean overclocking and running high wattage equipment. That PSU is junk and I would replace it with a quality 450w unit, but temporarily it will work.

A standard 1050 would be fine, still faster than the R9 270 and will play all the games you want to play at mid to low details.

Ok, I will plan to upgrade my PSU then as it's pretty much the heart of the PC. I have an i3-2120 as well but also plan to upgrade that but need a GPU upgrade first. As you know my situation, as well as the 1050, any other cards you recommend for playing the games I spoke about at medium level?

Would you be able to explain to me the difference with DirectX? Looking on the 1050 it says DirectX12 and I know I have DirectX11. Am I being thick and not knowing that it doesn't make a difference?

DirectX 12 devices support lower DirectX levels. Most games are DX11 or lower, new games now anc oming out are DX12 which is the newest version supported by WIndows 10

What's confusing me is that on one of the GPU pictures: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zotac-GeForce-1050-Mini-Graphics/dp/B01M4MIU94/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1481480714&sr=1-2-fkmr0&keywords=gtx+1050ti+mini It says DirectX 12, does all that mean is that the GPU supports DX12 or that it can only use that?

All of the nvida pascal cards like 1050, 1060,1070,1080,etc support DX12, Vulkan, OpenGL, DX11, DX10, DX9, and probably older APIs I dont even know about. You dont need to worry so much about API's if you have a 1050 and windows 10 you support DX12 and all the API's I mentioned above. If you have windows 7 or 8.1 with a 1050 you support all the API's I listed above except for DX12.

Solution

Oh right, brilliant. Thank you 😛

It was a typo, but yes Windows 10 is the only version of windows that supports DX 12.

But as I said, a card that says it supports DX 12 like that also supports any older DX versions. Nothing to worry about.
