So I have a budget gaming pc with the classic x4 860k+750ti. However, if I want to upgrade my cpu for cpu intensive games like borderlands/payday 2 I realized I should've gotten a i3 so upgrading cpu doesn't require a while new motherboard and in turn, a new OS.
Is there any way to reuse my OEM W10? I hear about people calling up Microsoft about this and they get a new key, but is that possible?

It certainly is, my friend did it, but when I've tried in the past they've told me to purchase a new key.
That makes me suspect they changed this policy once it really became common knowledge, because their sales would plummet. 🙁
I wouldn't recommend upgrading that PC, I'd just build a new rig from scratch given how outdated those components are at this stage.
Do you have a budget in mind?

The licence agreement changed in windows 8 to allow OEM copies to be transferred and then changed back from 8.1 onwards to the previous terms that say you can't. Technically the OEM licence is tied to the motherboard and can not be transferred, however MS will sometimes allow it. Only they know what exceptions they'll allow.

You could try telling them the old machine died and was repaired, but if you want to be totally honest you should buy a new key.

You can sell your old MB & CPU with the OEM copy of windows included as a working set and possibly get a bit more for it, then buy a new OEM copy. That's what you are supposed to do. If you want to transfer the OS when you upgrade you should buy a retail copy.
