is this a bug in Morrowind?

Sorry for the crosspost.

I just picked up a used copy of Morrowind: Game of the Year edition for
the XBox and I've tried starting 3 characters. All three times, my map
hasn't worked. The world map is fine, but not the normal map. It's
just black, in both the minimap and the fullscreen map. I've played
each one for a while (like an hour or so.)

I played the PC version a little a while back and I had the map from
the beginning. This seems like a bug/bad disc, but I confess I was too
lazy to read every word of the manual to check if this is a new
"feature" and I get the map later. The rest of the game works well
enough.

In short: is my game disc screwed up? It it supposed to be like this?

Thanks.

I played it for a while and if I remember correctly the world map is
fully visible and turns darker in the corners you explored. The close
up maps of locations are black and fill in when you walk around areas.
I am sure there is nothing wrong with your disc, as this seems to make
sense. Afterall, the game comes with a paper world map (as in everyone
has it, blah blah) but you must explore the locations to know what is
where.

Morrowind is kind of a strange game. :)

I never noticed that but then I only played the game for a couple of
hours. It rained during many of my exploration times and I did not
realize that weather does influence the way the map is filled in. Most
interesting.

I've has similar experiences and noticed that when running the map
doesn't "fill in" as much as if you take your time, walk, and look
around. Also, weather/day/night/elevation seems to have a impact
sometimes on how the map fills in.

Worth trying out and reporting back.

Thanks to everyone. But the automap isn't filling in at all, even in
good weather, and in an area I've explored at length. I've been near
Seyda Neen for quite a while (I've been doing quests and strolling
around for a couple of hours now) and it's completely black still.

Does this sound right? It definitely seems messed up to me. I never
had this problem with the PC version.

None at all.

Judging from the post below, I'm guessing it really is a bad disc or a
bug. I guess I'll try another copy.

I'm not sure you remember entirely correctly. The PC version may have the
full map, but it's details are opened bit by bit as you visit the locations.
In other words, you don't have everything from the start, and that way
encourages exploring the world.

I haven't played the Xbox version though, but the black colored map could be
doing the same thing, only a bit more "obvious" or downgraded from the PC
version.

I got the impression that this "fill in" does not work always as it
depends on the weather condition while you explore uncharted regions.

Can you see *any* detail if you crank the brightness way up on your TV?

Ah!!! That's it... Finally I know how to reproduce this bug,
(well, now it's a bit too late for Bethsoft to fix it...)

When you cross a cell border to a region with another current weather,
(e.g the West Gash / Bitter Coast transision north of Gnaar Mok)
The map isn't updated till you cross another cell-border, or enter
and leave an interior cell...

No wonder that this happens in Solstheim so often...

Ciao,
Jochen

It seems highly improbably that a bad disc would manifest itself as a
bug in the software, but I have no alternate explanation.

If the image file used for the world map is corrupt, it might not otherwise
affect the software, but would screw up the map display?

First, try deleting the game from the hard disk, and then loading it again.
It might not work, but it's an easy thing to try.
