Getting my nephew a starter gaming desktop for Christmas/Graduation gift. Is there anything I can cut from this besides the memory(already bought) or possibly better parts?

Solution
do not get that cx600 power supply, there are much better options. and the z97 mate is horrible. this would be just as fast. raise the base clock to 120ish or a little higher and your golden. the 390 will demolish the 960 in games.

He wants to play Fallout 4. I just want to give him something that won't need a a lot of upgrades two years from now. I am a fan of the GTX series and the 960 seems to have the best value.

Does anyone know the difference between the Z97 PC Mate and the Z97 Gaming 5? All I see is more audio ports and more USB 3.0 ports but Gaming 5 is about $50 more.

This build will perfectly fits the game he wants to play
The Z97 Gaming 5
supports DDR3-3300(OC) Memory
supports multi GPU, Crossfire ,SLI
since you're not upgrading it in two years, The z97 PC Mate will be the best option.

Additional:
If your nephew wants 4k ultra butter smooth gaming, go with the z97 Gaming 5 and SLI it with 2 display card.
