Is this a good and safe method for wiping a hard drive?

Hi

If you are not familiur with the CMD prompt it might be easier to get a ISO of DBAN, burn ISO image to a CD (or DVD)
then boot from DBAN and select erase all disks.

Alternative use hard disk manufactures bootable disgnostics disk and find erase hard drive in advanced options
(Seagate dos tools will work on other brands of hard drive)
Try Hirens boot CD from

for all the above tools and Western digital data lifeguard for Windows (again works on other brands of HDD)

Nothing wrong with using Windows DVD or recovery disk with Vista or later Windows as Full format will over write all sectors of partition (drive letter)

Nothing wrong with using Windows DVD or recovery disk with Vista or later Windows as Full format will over write all sectors of partition (drive letter)

so if HDD contains Partitions C:, D: & E: you have to format them separately or remove partitions, creat a new replacement partition then full format the partition
Default Format which is quick format does not destroy data only index to files.

HDD Diagnostics write to whole hard disk ignoring partitions AND test the HDD for bad sectors at the same time, which may be useful if reusing HDD
DBAN can write to several HDD at the same time
