Is there any way I can cut back on price a little bit without hindering performance? And would an AMD FX 8350 paired with an R9 280x give similar performance? any opinions and help is welcome

It is a much better quality unit.
You don't need the cpu cooler as the stock cpu cooler is fine.

This is a very nice system to play games, and if you want Extra qualities with recording and similar stuffs, I guess AMD FX 8350 + R9 280x would give slightly-better performance, since it's 8-Core and recenter, but would take more money.

Theres no point in getting a different CPU cooler, cuz you wont be able to OC the CPU with the non "K" version of this i5 and the H97 Mobo. Also get a reference design GTX 970 so that heat releases out, instead inside the case.
