Solution
skip the WD Green. grab a Seagate 7200.14 (ST3000DM001 or similar) - they're quicker, don't sleep, and just as cheap.
also, i'm guessing a mismatch between CPU ($$$$$) and GPU ($$)
If I were you, I will wait for the AMD's R3XX. I'll were going to buy a 970 but I've heard that they have problems with te memory brandwith if u use the last 0.5 gb.

Thanks, so do you mean to balance the prices between the GPU and CPU. For example spending more money for a better GPU to match the CPU price?

not necessarily in dollars, but in capability. isn't the i7 you picked pretty well near the top of the food chain? the gtx970 is likely no slouch, but to me just seems like you could either scale back the CPU or toss a few dollars more at a heftier GPU. then again, you are also using this for non-game stuff, so maybe the i7 is justified there.

but my main point was about that WD Green. i have one and hate how it behaves, but i'm not about to throw 4TB of capacity in the garbage. i'd like to. i've thrown more expensive junk in the trash!
