Is this a good quality gaming pc build?

Solution
I'd throw that whole thing out. On your budget you can get way better components. And there's no need to with the last generation to save a few extra bucks. And you also don't need things like thermal compound either.

I would get something like this:

CPU: Intel - Core i7-8700K 3.7GHz 6-Core Processor ($346.69 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: Corsair - H115i PRO 55.4 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($139.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Asus - ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($189.39 @ OutletPC)
Memory: G.Skill - Trident Z RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory ($216.89 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Samsung - 960...
If you want high end build, then this is fine. solid choice :)
BUT you have MOBO. by choosing non K cpu I think its 110H or something right ?
Still I would go for 7700 instead of 6'th gen, as its OK (you can update bios now to make sure it will work with 7'th gen CPU). Maybe even K version for boosted clock, still would work faster than non K version. Not much difference though, still going for earlier series when you buy NEW is not very good choice. Still if you have good offer on 6700 and 7700 will not have it (~50$ diff) then go for 6700 and again same for K

I suggest going for higher GHz processor. Like an i7-7700k 3.8GHz - 4.2GHz Turbo. The newest games out there aren't just tearing through video cards but they are eating wimpy processors for dinner. Once you get that thing built then pick up FFXV game or benchmark and you can see what a new game can do.

My mother board is the Asus z170-A
I also need help if the monitor I chose is good or not I have heard 4k is nice but some tell me to get 144hz. The one i chose so far is 2550x1440 165hz. I mainly only play AAA titles like assasins creed or randomly steam games but especially I play a lot of mmos like Wow. The only fps I really play is overwatch.

As for the cpu I tried to pick the newest version but pcpartpicker said it wasn't compatible with my mobo for some reason not sure why

The reason it was listed as not compatible is because it does not have an updated BIOS. You can update you BIOS with your current CPU. Get a 7700k so you can overclock also (high refresh rates are quite CPU dependent).

I might rethink everything.
First the only FPS game is Overwatch so I would not really be concerned about a monitor over 60HZ or a 1MS response time. A IPS monitor has a really good picture and would really be fine with a GTX 1080.

Not sure of the rest of your PC parts bit I figure it is a working PC.
I would consider selling your PC as a working ready to go rig. Take out your memory and use the memory I will list, take out your ssd and install a simple WD blue drive (if you don't already have a storage drive in it) their it is a complete working PC ready to be sold.

If your current PC has no regular hard drive then buy one more of the blue drives listed. This will give you the Samsung SSD for your OS and programs, a 500GB SSD for your main games and a regular drive for storage.

With the money you get for selling your current PC (with the parts listed swapped out for the new PC) you could come out with a very good gaming PC for a fairly low price.

Very helpful thanks maybe I am going overkill the the monitor and 1080ti.

My current pc is an older i5, Radeon 380x graphics card and the z170-a mobo. I'd like to sell it all together but it was my first pc build and looks like crap. Ideally I would like to sell the pieces off one at a time but maybe keep the mobo. I'm not sure how good the z170-a is anymore.

I play high end games like pubg sometimes but maybe not enough to warrant the high power parts. The only consistent fps I play is overwatch. I would to play wow with a beautiful display and new games that come out with amazing display but then the high Hz is also useful so it's hard to say. Games like witcher3 and the assassin's creed I play a lot and would like good visuals on that
