Is this a safe overclock?

I am no computer genius, but I have previously overclocked my Ryzen 5 1600 quite a bit so I decided I would take a look at my new i7 8700k paired with a NZXT x62, which on stock idles at around 24 Celsius.

I have an ASUS Prime z370-p, in which on the bios has an "EZ Tuning Wizard" that overclocks the system by itself. I decided to do it just to see what they wizard would set my CPU to, so I applied it and booted my PC up. It has it set to 5ghz, which I wasn't planning on going that far.

I ran a cinebench test and my PC didn't crash or anythingthing, I got a 1605 (no clue if thats good)

Anyway, the point of this post was to ask if this EZ Tuning Wizard is safe, or if I should just do a manual like 4.7 overclock on default vlotages, if anyone knows reply!

It's safe to use EZ Tuning, but the most important thing to watch here are your temps. Use HWMon or soemthing to watch whats going on.

EZ TUning is like an auto OC, so it will overvolt and create a bit of heat which you need to monitor.

OC through the bios manually is the way to go to get a solid stabe OC, with lowest voltage possible, thus keeping the heat down and avoiding potentially having the CPU throttle.

Run Prime 95 (small fft's - only) with your OC. Use HWMon to look at temps. If when running Prime your temps hit 80c then you need to look at taking the OC off, and fine tuning a manual OC. IF temps stay under 80c then you are good to go.

Here is a comprehensive guide to coffee lake overclocking. It will help get you more comfortable with the process. https://www.tweaktown.com/guides/8481/coffee-lake-overclocking-guide/index2.html

To answer your question though, most people consider manually overclocking to be significantly better because you can find the sweet spot better than the ez tuning wizard. In my experience, the ez tuning wizard often sets the voltages much higher than they need to be, and the OC is not always stable over longer periods of time. Many of the 8700k chips can OC to 5Ghz though so that is normal.

Hi, the EZ Tuning Wizard tend to give too much vcore to the 8700K for the 5GHz...I think it would be worth checking CPUz or Hardware info to see how high the vcore is under load like Prim95 or Aida..If it is above 1.4, I would not be happy.

You should be able to manually overclock and get the same 5GHz but with a much lower vcore in the 1.3v range. Personally I do not like anything above 1.35v on my 8700K...

The 8700K is a great overclocker so do push but keep the vcore as low as possible..

Just ran a test on prime95 with a lower clock speed than before (4.7 with auto voltages on) instantly hit 100c, so I stopped obviously. Should I set a manual voltage? I'm not really familiar with intel so I am not sure what a good place to start is.

I see you have yours pushed to 4.9, I would like to have mine at a simple 4.7 because I don't need the full power out of it. What do you recommend for a good place to start on voltages for 4.7?

4.7 on auto voltage should not have resulted in 100 degrees C. I would also use Prime95 version 26.6 for Intel CPU's and just do a blend test first. There are many guides for ASUS overclocking on the 8700K which I would have a look at to get the best settings possible. I have mine at 4.9GHz at 1.278v though I am using adaptive/offset but temps are great in the 70's degrees. At 5ghz I need 1.34v and it just gets to hot in the 80/90's.

4.7 should be very simple on yours by just changing the all core multiplayer to 47 and leaving everything on auto. If at all possible use adaptive (though not sure on ASUS as i have a Gigabyte Gaming 7) but it should be more than okay at just under 1.3v more like 1.27v for the 4.7GHz or less.

Hopefully some ASUS users with the 8700K can jump in and help you on the settings.

What do you idle at on 4.9?

Yikes, I have a 280mm AIO, running 4.7 at 1.25 volts right now and its idling at 39-41 degrees C,

Okay a couple of things...Do you live in a hot country? and have you got enough airflow in your case./..if not hot country and good airflow, I would definitely re-install the X62 to make sure it is on properly...

I live in Canada and it's been a hot summer, my case is also known to have shit airflow, and the last issue I don't have anymore thermal paste so I can't re seat my x62

Just run at stock but do order more TIM, something like Thermal Grizzly, Cooler Master Master Gel Maker, MX4 etc. and then re-install....as I think that might well be the issue. Also just double check the Pump speed via Hardware Info or NZXT CAM software just to rule out any pump issues...

Yeah everything is running at the correct speeds, should I just set it back to 3.7 again, or leave it at 4.7 on these temps?

I would just leave leave it at stock with the default optimised settings in BIOS and save...This is still plenty fast enough as the 8700K will boost to 4.7 on some cores....and wait for the TIM...If its hitting a 100 degrees at load, though in gaming it should still be fine..still, I wouldn't take chances until you re-install with new TIM.

Alright thanks man, I just ordered some new paste, had to get MX-4 as the stuff you suggested couldn't be delivered to me, hopefully this fixes the temps.

I think I just stumbled into another problem... I've never used an ASUS board before so I don't know how to revert the EZ Tuning Wizard stuff, so I just cleared CMOS, and the clockspeed is now at 4.5 ghz? I have no clue how to get it to the default clockspeed.

I turned it off and it's still at 4.4-4.5 so I don't really care anymore... Idling at 32-34 and under 100% it was at like 60 c so Im fine with that.

Yes, absolutley. DO not keep that OC. That way too high.

What cooler do you have?

I have a NZXT Kraken X62

Yes, the higher the OC/Voltage the more heat. It's not exactly exponential or anything, but thats kinda the idea behind OC'ing. Fine tuning the proc to get more performance. But knowing how/when/where to push is the key.
