This is my part list
i7 6700k, gtx 1080 founders, 16gb memory z170 msi board.
Is it worth it to upgrade to 9th gen i7 I do see that games like Apex and Battlefield 5 my gpu usage is around 60% and cpu is 100%. I would think this would mean cpu bottleneck but would I see much improvement when gaming on 1440p and wanting at least 120 frames? Thank you very much!

Solution
Worth is something only YOU can determine.
If you are contemplating changing to a 1440P monitor, I suggest you buy the monitor first and see how you do.
You will then be better able to assess if you need a cpu or a graphics card upgrade.
Here is my stock approach to that question:

Some games are graphics limited like fast action shooters.
Others are cpu core speed limited like strategy, sims, and mmo.
Multiplayer tends to like many threads.
You need to find out which.
------------------------------------------------------------
To help clarify your CPU/GPU options, run these two tests:
a) Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better...
No bottlenecks there, its not as simple as "my cpu is 100% my gpu is 60%, therefore I have a massive bottleneck", no. The 6700k albeit obsolete and a 4/8 is still capable and perfectly fine for a 1080 non ti even, just overclock it.

the reality however is that 4/8 are becoming more and more less than ideal... i'd dare to say you'd get better FPS going for a better GPU than CPU still.

regardless, i wouldnt upgrade, im waiting 10th gen, and if you can i think you should... that kaby lake refresh refresh monster that is 9th gen is.... well, a refurbish of the refurbish, and its likely that 10th gen wont fit Z390 boards so you'll need a new mobo anyways just as you need right now if you decide to go 8 or 9 gen

a) Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.
b) Limit your cpu, either by reducing the OC, or, in windows power management, limit the maximum cpu% to something like 70%.
Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
This will simulate what a lack of cpu power will do.
Conversely what a 30% improvement in core speed might do.
You should also experiment with removing one or more cores/threads. You can do this in the windows msconfig boot advanced options option.
You will need to reboot for the change to take effect. Set the number of threads to less than you have.
This will tell you how sensitive your games are to the benefits of many threads.
If you see little difference, your game does not need all the threads you have.

It is possible that both tests are positive, indicating that you have a well balanced system,
and both cpu and gpu need to be upgraded to get better gaming FPS.

your rig get getting old but not old enough that you need to upgrade it. (can easily use it for 3 more years)
you got K chip, overclock it a bit
and if you got money and really, really want a new CPU, i suggest you wait for upcoming 10nm from intel and since you will need a new motherboard as well u can check out ryzen 3rd gen too
wait this end of this year.
