Is this an upgrade - 2600k to 3790k?

Hey guys,

I have a 2600k no a z68 asrock z68 extreme4 gen 3....

I've been given a computer, mobo is intel dx70si with 3930k cpu....

Just wondering if I should change out to that untill I upgrade?

My 2600k can o/c happily to 4.8GHz, but I keep it at 4.6 for everyday to reduce voltage...

I just got the 3930 system, so I haven't looked at tried o'cing it but internet says it runs hot... maybe 4.4 is best everyday o/c......

My question is, I'm super happy with the 2600k setup I've got.... should I change out to the intel board & 3930k....

I know it was an intel entry level video coding machine back in 2011, hence the limited cpu support on this board( It doesn't support the 2600k for example).... i-net benchmarks from back in the day show it 20% faster, but I'm wondering in the real world it's worth the hassle of changing out.....

Thanks

For multitasking, yes the 3930k would be a considerable bonus, 2x cores and 4x threads, all about 4.2-4.4GHz if you can keep it cool. That was the major issue, moving from a 80w cpu to a 130w cpu under OC conditions required things like big air or large aios at a minimum. But for most games of that Era, no, since they were heavily single threaded and the lga1155/6 cpus generally had stronger IPC at the top end. The 2011's single largest bonus was the pcie lanes for cf/sli as they could handle upto 4x gpus and not loose out, whereas lga1155 was mostly x16/x4 or if you had the good boards x8/x8.

So if you have a use for that 2011, sure, keep it, but mostly it'd end up being a money pit if you wanted to actually start using its...

No, I don't do any video stuff.... It is just an unwanted machine a mate had..... My pc needs are super low, just web pages and you tube.... play a movie, old game emulators...stuff like that.....

Then you wouldn't really benefit from swapping it out. If you were bored and wanted a project then sure. Have you checked the prices of those parts on eBay?

Is this the motherboard you have?https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-DX79SI-LGA-2011-Intel-X79-SATA-6Gb-s-USB-3-0-ATX-Intel-Motherboard/113155264211?epid=114516525&hash=item1a58944ed3:g:Sj4AAOSwe6xbJyVJ:sc:USPSPriority!72021!US!-1

It looks the same.... Isn't that a stupid price for a nearly decade old mobo..... It does have two usb 3.0 ports...... Have I happened on a good board?..... How do I tell.... I've cpu-z installed.... does that give you the exact mobo model #?

MINIMAL PC NEEDS ALREADY?

1) no don't change to that since there's no point, plus you know your current system works fine likely.

2) the only differences you might get with an UPGRADE to your system are not with the CPU. I can think only of things like:

a) better MONITOR (i.e. 2560x1440, IPS, 27"... depending on current monitor)
b) better SPEAKERS
c) swap HDD to SSD (i.e. clone) for Windows drive if you've not done so for slightly faster boot and application loading.
d) CPU cooler and/or case fans (if that would make system quieter)

3) Long story short is that you need to look at how you use the PC but the i7-3930K would give absolutely no benefit whatsoever. I have an i7-3770K (at 4.4GHz) which would be almost identical to your i7-2600K at 4.6GHz and I game with a GTX1080 at 2560x1440 with minimal CPU bottlenecking and my desktop usage usually hovers around 5% idle and maybe 25% or so in Google Chrome (varies a lot).

*In fact, why are you talking about a future upgrade beyond these two PC builds when your needs are currently limited?

Unless you plan to get into PC GAMING or VIDEO EDITING or some other demanding task there's minimal benefit to upgrading. Even then a better graphics card might be all you need depending on the game as again I have a great experience with a similar CPU.

Motherboards end up being the most difficult part to find on an "end of life" system. They tend to go bad and not as many of them were made. So the prices actually go up on them. Supply and demand.

If it looks like that then that's likely it, but yes CPU-Z should tell you the motherboard model.

O.K..... cpu-z says....

DX79SI - AAG288-08-602
Chipset - rev 7
S-Bridge - Rev 5
Ver - SIX7910J.86A.0460.2012.0327.1627

Yeah I mean that's it. LGA 2011 and i7-3930K is part of Intel's High-End Desktop (HEDT) lineup from 2011.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply... I'm only a very amateur pc guy.... I have built two, but that's not hard to do... You tube is good like that... I was thinking the same as far as changing out to 3930 for what I do....

As for my next pc.... Around 12 months time....It will be the appropriate intel 10nm ice lake k chip with a mobo that supports ddr5 with 6000+ mhz memory and a possibly vega chipped gpu.... that depends on gpu prices and performance in 12 months time.... Should be worth the wait if you believe the hype........

That's pretty much what I thought..... My 2600k Is pretty awesome for a chip that cost $200 less than the 3930k..... It seemed a no brainer to change, bu the o/cing temps in reviews from back in the day that were concerning to me with the extra two cores.... I can run 2.6 all day on the 2600k.... It seems fast to me....... :)

This has been answered, so no one will probably read this.....I just wanted to thank Volkgren in particular and also Photonboy for their awesome answers.... I can't get advice on near decade old tech from a single person I know in the real world.... What an awesome thing it is to have experts prepared to help out a beginner..... Thank you guys and obviously Karadjne as well......
