Question Is this issue I'm having caused by my motherboard or my graphics card?

Greetings to all,

long time lurker and gatherer of knowledge from so many of you good folks on here, I thank you for making this a great source of valuable information. I had to finally create an account and ask for some help as I have exhausted myself trying to get a Vega 56 Red Dragon card to work in my newly installed motherboard. I was using an Intel Asrock Z97 4790k system that was set up for AMD graphic cards and had no issues with any AMD graphic cards with it. I found a MSI MPG X570 GAMING PLUS board and installed a Ryzen 5 2600 in it with Windows 11 and it works great and I'm happy with it overall.

My Power Color Vega 56 worked fine in the old Intel system but it will not work in the AMD 570 board.
It will boot up to Windows without the AMD driver installed, just the basic windows driver, it is being recognized by GPUz, and HWiNFO64 and the AMD bios flash tool. The problem is when installing the AMD 24.9.1 driver. The driver starts to install, the screen blinks as normal and then when near the end when Windows restarts, the progress circle spins and spins then freezes and after waiting and waiting the PC just shuts down. Same thing when I restart it.

I thought it was something with Windows 11 because I installed the card in a different board on my bench with a portable Windows 10 OS and it worked fine with it and even passed a benchmark test. So, I downgraded the MSI board to Windows 10 but it still freezes and can't get past the driver install as before .

I even tried flashing the cards bios but same thing. I used DDU to clean install the GPU driver as well and the board also has the latest bios too. I even installed a different VEGA 56 of the MSI blower variety in it and that one works fine in the MSI board. My RX 580 works. So I'm stuck..Is it the MSI 570 board or the Power Color card?

Full disclosure, the card has always run in x8 mode not 16 since I've had it. I took it apart. cleaned and repasted it and looked at the components and pcie fingers, all look good so I kept using it that way until swapping boards and then this problem started.

Any suggestions or if anyone has had this or heard of a similar situation, would be much appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Could possibly be that the VBIOS for the card might be what's holding you back. Either that or your OS and BIOS are limiters.

When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.
^ Since you mentioned a prior system, please add both system specs and what you've recycled from said prior build.

On a side note, if you swapped motherboards after an OS install, you're going to have to reinstall the OS...and since this is Windows 10 and above, you should install the OS in offline mode, installing all drivers in an elevated command.

Hello, thank you for the welcome and the reply. Please excuse my delay in responding. I double checked current BIOS version thinking I may have used a BETA version but I didn't. The specs for the current machine being discussed are as follows:
This setup is currently not running in any game boost OC or XMP mode.

I flashed the cards Bios to a newer version already with same results.
I'm going to run DDU again but this time will install the AMD driver only
without the Adrenaline software to see if that makes any difference..
The other MB that I bench tested the Power Color Vega 56 with success is a
Gigabyte Z170 X Gaming 6 with a 6700k cpu and portable Windows 10 on a 2.5" SSD.
Strange the card works on Intel systems but not AMD? smh..

Do you have a copy of an earlier build of Windows 10 or 11.

If not you can google where to get a pre 24H2 copy of Windows ISO.

What else do you have to loose it just might be the ticket in than do an in place upgrade to 24H2.

That's an idea thanks. I just installed the card on the Gigabyte I7-6700K on the bench again and it ran perfect on the
portable Windows 10, I did notice that AMD Adrenaline software is NOT installed on that portable OS.
I only use it for testing purposes, so now I will DDU the AMD board and install the AMD driver ONLY and see what happens.
I will report back, thank you for your reply.

Well I finally got the Power Color Vega 56 running great with my MSI MPG X570 setup.
Here's what I did.
I removed the AMD driver using DDU. Re-installed the driver only, no Adrenaline software.
It booted to my desktop, but then crashed again like before smh. This time I re-started it, got into the Bios menu and snooped around the PCIE settings. It was set to run in x16 mode as normal but gave me the option to run in x8 mode, so I said why not and changed it to that because the card has run in x8 mode since I got it anyway. Saved the changes and Booted the machine up again and this time it had no problems at all. It's strange that in auto mode it wouldn't detect that the card runs in x8 mode? Anyway..
Ran Heaven benchmark 2 times and the card produced better numbers then with the Intel Z97 4790K setup I had before.
Now, I may try to re-install the AMD adrenaline software again just to see if it will play nice since I set the Bios to run in x8 mode? But for now I'm satisfied that I at least found a way to make my new/old setup work. What a weird problem this has been tho.
On a personal note,
I was never into computers until a few years back after health issues and I needed something to keep me occupied and keep my mind sharp. This is why I play around with older PC hardware. All the stuff that is considered old and outdated is all brand new to me lol and I've been having a blast with my new hobby learning and getting acquainted with the hardware that most of you guys have already blew by years ago lol, in fact The MSI MPG X570 this problem was all about is my first AMD build. I'm sure I'll be having some more questions and engage on the forum a little more. Thanks again guys and take care of yourselves.
