My friend gave me a gtx 980 windforce g1 which everywhere I read recommended a min 600W PSU, my old PSU was a 700W but it only had pcie 1(8pin) and 1(6pin) connector which was never a problem because I had a gtx 960 4gb which only uses 6pin. So in order to use the 980 I went down to Frys Electronics and went to go ask and was told to use an adapter to convert the 6pin to 8pin. Bought the adapter for 6pin to 8pin and plugged in the 980, everything seemed to be okay then about 2min in while I was downloading ddu and the drivers to reinstall for the 980 the pc shut down, I was certain that the motherboard was definitely fried because it would not post or system check. The only led indicator on the board was a white PWR led that turned on when the PSU was on, not sure if the 4790k is also fried as I am waiting for a replacement board to test. After a day of testing we were certain that the mobo & psu were definitely dead my friend had spare parts and we put together this 6700 build, after days of searching I'm still trying to figure out if this 600W psu would actually be enough to power the gtx 980 windforce g1 and the system together while gaming.

TLDR; Old psu was 700W missing another 8pin pcie so I used an adapter and mobo and psu died, got a new system but now only 600W, can it power the 980?

Current build:
i7 6700 non K

Corsair VS 600W PSU

Old Build:

Corsair h80i aio water cooler
16Gb ddr3 1600
1 Samsung 850 250Gb Boot
2 Seagate 1TB HDD 7200
700W Power Supply (non modular, currently don't have the model)

Solution
I'm stuck with this psu for now but plan to get a modular one later.
doesnt matter if its modular or not, there are both modular and non-modular good psu's.
Modular is just a personall preference.
But i quess the VS should be fine with the gtx 980 for now.
How can people even get a job at electronics store if they dont know the basics.
Never use adapters, splitters for your graphics card.
Even if your psu has 100000W,if it doesnt have enough connectors for a card,it was never meant to power such a GPU.
So is your question did my mobo and psu die,or is your question can Corsair VS 600W power the 980?

Can this 600W psu power the 980 and everything else in the current build?
