Hi! First post here. I have a HP dv6 6165tx. Specs can be found here - http://www.flipkart.com/hp-notebook-dv6-6165tx-laptop-2nd-gen-ci7-4gb-750gb-2gb-ddr5-graphics-win-7-beats-audio/p/itmd2pvecubhfpqv?pid=COMD2PVDWZWH6UDS

Specifically my laptop has two RAM slots and a max capacity of 16GB. One of them already has a 4GB Samsung RAM running at 1333MHz

I often experience lag on Ubuntu 14.04 when running some heavy application. So I am thinking of buying a 4GB or 8GB ram. I googled and found out that this ram looks pretty good. Will this be compatible with my laptop?

Also since my laptop has just two slots, should I go for a 8GB ram(so the total ram would be 12GB). Will there be a huge performance difference between 8GB ram(4+4) and 12GB ram(4+8)?

I saw this ram for 8GB.

Thanks

Generally it is not a good idea to mix and match RAM the way you are planning to do. It can cause issues and in some situations it won't work at all. It would be better to buy a kit with two sticks and just not use the Samsung stick that came pre-installed. You won't notice a difference between 8GB of RAM and 12GB of ram if you never use more than 8GB. Most people don't so if your trying to save some money just stick with 8GB. You should buy a kit of two 4GB sticks so you can run in dual channel. Buy one of these kits and you'll be good to go. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&N=100007609%20600000410%20600000401
