i looked at the r9 280s and a r9 290
your definitely right about the 270x being no good, but would recommend the r9 290 at this price?

R9 290 is ok for that price but if you save a bit more then you can get a GTX 970.
But ask yourself this, do you really need/want ultra settings?
I mean a R9 270/R9 270X 2GB or GTX 760 is still decent for 1080p gaming.
Personally, I was considering an upgrade to GTX 970 but held off since I still know i be happy with my R9 270 so bought some IE80 :D

Yes GTX 970 is great for 1080p ultra gaming for upcoming games with at least 60fps. Older released games will play at 60 or higher with some exception with demanding games like Crysis 3.
 


It is okay for the price but I would personally just get the 270X in a few weeks from now or get the 750Ti.
